What would cause a 1995 Nissan Maxima to run and idle rough at times, and then run perfectly normal? Is this a problem with the injectors, spark plugs, plug wires, or what could it be? The check engine light does not come on, so this seems to be minor, yet annoying problem that needs to be corrected. The car is in perfect condition and is garaged and well cared for. I look forward to hearing from you. Greg Porter

It could be a failing sensor, most common is the cam sensor, if its not reading sometimes it will give wrong signal, most come to do this when engine is hot.

SOURCE: 1999 nissan frontier is idling rough the truck

This can be your Idle control valve, when you turn the air on it puts the engine under load and your computer will increase the idle automatically to prevent the engine from cutting out.
When you are standing still and the car is shaking, by touching the accelerator very softly does the shaking stop? If so check the idle control valve.
I hope this will help.

Sam

1999 Nissan Maxima, rough idle, engine "jerks" when driving. A few years ago I had to have the #5 ignition coil replaced. Kind of the same problems back then, except it was only rough when...

It sounds like you have a bad coil, a bad injector, or a dead cylinder. Any way you look at it it sounds like you are not hitting on all cylinders. You may want to check and see if you have spark in all you plug wires. If you have spark that means your coils are working. Next I would check the injectors with an olm meter. I think those injectors should olm at around 12.9 olm. much higher or lower they are probably bad. If that is all good I would find a compression gauge and check all of the cylinder's compression. The compression needs to be at least 100 psi in order to fire that cylinder properly. I hope this helps you out and gives you some ideas as to where to start looking.

check your MAF sensor first..thats what it was on my 4th generation Maxima after tearing down the whole tbi system and what not....just pull out the sensor itself and clean it up, see if thats it, if not....idle control valve probably. or wiring.

TRY cleaning your throttle plate. these get some carbon buildup and will restrict airflow at idle and can cause the computer to try and compensate for it
