We took our 05 equinox to the shop for rear wheel bearing replacements, the owner of the shop called and said the center carrier bearing was really really bad and he could replace it. We said ok to the agreed amount, he said he would have to take it to another shop to get it off but the shop couldn't do it and that he would have to order a new one and be delayed another day. Today he called and said we need a new drive shaft for $1100.00 as a result of the attempted carrier bearing replacement, he broke something and wants me to pay for the shaft, my question is, what could he have broke and my research concludes this center carrier bearing can be replaced without buying a new drive shaft?

he told me that he would change it for $64 labor and $150 for the driveshaft shop, then he said took it to the shaft shop and they both were taking it apart and the shaft shop said they couldn't do it, so the owner called and said the shaft shop couldn't do it and that he was going to get a new carrier bearing from the dealer and we would have it back the next day by closing time... then he called the next morning and said there was a problem because the center carrier bearing was welded on and can't be replaced and need a new drive shaft and that our drive shaft was in pieces on the shop floor, he said it was broken, i to;d him that i would pay for the wheel bearings he replaced plus labor but i wanted him to put the drive shaft back on the car the way it was when i brought it in to him, he saqid he couldn't but could tow it to me, i said i'd call him back. He called me back and said it would take a new u-joint to put it back together and he could do that and that would get it back to where it was when i drove it in to him? does this make sense? i am not pleased with the outcome so far, i feel that he didn't do his homework before he dug into the job, and never did he mention the possibillity of a drive shaft replacement being a worse case senario at $1151

That work should ONLY be done by a
Drive Shaft Specialty Shop ,that repairs
& balances lots of things, not just driveshafts

I will agree with you, as I don't know

But a dealer will sell you the whole deal,
so I never recommend them for even a car wash

There may be,just saying, don't know, a very few that
can't be repaired.

I would pick it up & personally take it to a driveshaft
shop & not pay anything for that part of the work
agreed to.

I never had those issues when i had my trans shop,
because I followed my rules & I was a machinist
before, so there isn't much I can't do

Flywheel,Clutch &Driveshaft Balancing & tire
mounting I personally take out of shop & stand by
to see the work getting done.

I'am glad not to be the merchant
I have been in some bad situations
& in court & won them all,but unpleasant
I think what he said made sense. BUT you
will not have anything but pieces of the old drive shaft
He can not put back what was broken at the
other shop. I hope you know your on your own
to by & install a $1000 new shaft. He will
toe you vehicle home for free, but you can't
use it. Basically your both agreeing to go your
own way under the best of all solutions

How to replace bearing in rear drum on a 2006 chevy equinox

You need to use a bearing press to get it out and the new one in. You can try to hammer it out with a piece of pipe if you can catch onto the lip. Sometimes wheel bearings get very stuck and if it scores or damages the drum on the way out you may need to get a new drum. If you don't have the tools you might be able to rent or borrow a press from a shop or auto parts store. If you take it to a brake shop and have them press out the bearing and put in the new one it shouldn't cost that much.

How do I replace my carrier bearing in a 1988 Chevy Silverado extended cab long bed?

I'm guessing your you are referring to the drive shaft center support bearing. Remove u-joint 4 bolts at rear diff., then 2 bolts for center support. Slide driveshaft assembly out of trans. and lay on ground. On either side of the center support, make alignment marks on front and rear half of drive shafts with a crayon or tape (very important for re-assembly). Slide rear half off. Press out center support. Clean sleeve with emery cloth or 400 grit sand paper. Press on new center support, lube splines and reconnect drive shaft halves making sure alignment marks meet. Install assembly and torque bolts.

Rear wheel bearings

Get a different shop to check all of the suspension components - if the struts both snapped, something is going on that's a much bigger concern than the wheel bearings. Look for bent control arms and other suspension components - check clearances and bushings everywhere in the rear, make sure nothing was installed backwards or forgotten. Struts don't just snap, and bearings should definitely not die every couple thousand miles. Also, have a dealer look at it, to make sure that things are installed properly. It won't be cheap there, but they might notice something that other shops routinely miss. I hate suggesting that ANYONE go to a dealership for service, but in this case, they're the most likely to notice something out of spec...

Took 05 equinox to shop for wheel bearing work and shop called and said center carrier bearing needed replaced immediately. He told me that he would change it for $64 labor and $150 for the driveshaft...

It does seem a little bit shady. They should have done a full diagnosis on the repairs that were needed and then gotten you're approval before they proceeded with the repairs. If you didn't give them approval to do all that work, then they did it at their own risk. In my opinion you should only pay them for what you approved them to work on. What a hassle...good luck with that.

I'm told I have a bad carrier bearing? Noise and vibration.

carrier bearings are in the rear differential, and when they go bad,you will have a VERY noticable grind noise come from the rear and some vibration. They are reltively easy easy to replace yourself, though a good shop will charge around $200 for parts AND labor.

Rubber and metal mount on the drive shaft nust after the u joint 2005 Chevy equinox Looks like a mount and it is suppose to keep the drive shaft flat.

I am going through this now. I hear there is a huge problem with these. Some call a "hangar bearing". I got one from the dealer...only place available. It took me and a very talented mechanic friend most of the day yesterday to get the drive shaft out of the car and apart so the bearing could be changed. We had to use heat and a press to split the shaft at the yolk and torches to cut out the U joints. The end that mates to the tranny needed heat as well. After finally getting it out and bringing it to a driveline shop for balancing I was told they can't balance it because they have no way of mounting the front "CV joint" fitting to the balancer. The weights all came off the shaft when the bearing failed as it vibrated away. Not very happy with this at all. Can't believe GM hasn't re-called these. The drive shaft looked as though it had been rotting away in a field for twenty years. Our vehicle is an '05.
Good luck,
Mike

How do i remove the rear wheel bearing from my 1993 mr2

You cannot, however, a machine shop or service center can. The rear wheel bearings are a press fit on an MR2 and require a 50+ ton hydraulic press to remove. You do not want to learn to do this with a carrier that costs $300 + not to mention the cost of a hub and a bearing. Take it to a garage to have the work done. If you must do all you can do yourself... You must remove the rear carrier "http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/volume2/suspension_and_axle.htm" and take it along with a new bearing to a service shop or machine shop to be pressed in. If you feel that you can accomplish this with a vise or a hammer and some creative applications of force... you can't! Even if you succeed in installing it with some combination of vise/hammer/oven you will have damaged the bearings badly in the process and they will fail in a short amount of time.
