I wouldn't recommend synthetic oil for a car that appears to have a small leak. Synthetic oil is very thin and will find that smallest of leaks and leave you adding oil all the time. Considering the length of your commute, I'd go with a heavier oil (10W40) or heavier and change the oil every 3000 miles. If the heavier oil doesn't solve your problem, you will need to identify the leak and get it repaired.

The tranny fluid on most cars and trucks is 30,000 miles ,as far as the engine oil if you use a good oil brand like Honda motor oil or even like Motorcraft they are a synthectic blend 5w20 and you can go 5,000 miles between oil changes. Now if your useing regular motor oil change it every 3,000 miles.Hope that helps

Excessive oil usage. Uses one quart/1,500 miles. Has 206,000 miles V6 3.6L

use 2 tools .
a compression guage. (RTM about the oil trick)
and the leak down tool , at spark holes.
this tells you the ring leak down rates, done correctly
all shops worth salt, know it.
if car smokes, bingo
if only smokes first start up, bad valve seals.

at 200k , this can be normal, if not freq. oil changes or was overheated.

a pro can tell you what leaks with the leak tool
valves or rings, or other places....all bad....

2005 Titan Crewcab with 120,000 miles on it. Uses a quart of oil every 500 - 600 miles

If it is using that much, it is leaking somewhere. As long as you keep it full, it will probably be ok. You need to find the leak though because it can get much worse. Find it and try to fix it.

Bought the envoy w/ 70,000 miles, fresh oil change. @ 74,000 miles it was 1.5 qrts low, put in 5w30, checked oil 2 weeks later it was 1 qrt low. do not see smoke or any leaking.

I just bought a 2005 envoy too. I read in the manual that the 4.6 6 cyl engine needs 7 qts total. 2 Over the normal oil change. Is it possible it wasn't low to start? I noticed when Walmart changed the oil they charged extra for the change because it needed the two extra qts. However my dip stick has oil over the full mark. Seemed strange but I haven't had any leaks and after 3k mile no change in level. Make sure you had the correct about the first time.

My 2005 mazda tribute seems to be throwing oil on headline and engine. It eats oil. Mechanic says there is now oil on the bottom of the car...70k miles. Should I get rid of this car? What could be wrong?

Don`t be afraid of this, take the car to a shop you can trust and ask them to find the oil leak,it has to be a oil leak the problem on your car.

Low on engine oil

Well, if there are no leaks, then it has to be piston rings or valve seals. If it's only burning a quart every 1500 miles, you would barely see any smoke, and by the standards of 20 or 30 years ago, that was normal.

Low oil in 2005 gmc canyon

all because its not leaking doesnt mean its not burning oil, put oil in it until the full mark before driving it again. DO NOT DRIVE WITH LOW OIL!

Oil leak

I would talk to the tech where you had the oil changed to be certain even though it doesn't sound serious from your description.

Using oil

How many miles on it and does it smoke? If it does, your oil rings are bad.
