Removed oil pan bolts and it seems the trans axle housing is keeping the oil pan from coming off in the rear, do I need to unbolt the trans axle from the block to remove oil pan?

best method is to disconnect all accessories from top of engine raise vehicle at least three feet remove axles from hubs if vyou bare replacing both as a unit remove trans pan and drain remove lower baljoints from spindals then unbolt stearing rack from cradle and tie up hookengine hoist to engine unbolt rear trans mount brom left inner fender well remove four cradel bolts and lover assy onto floor or sturdy low rolling platform and roll out from under car you may also heed to remove radiator for safe clearance

Raise the vehicle and properly support it. Remove the wheel and drum. Remove the rear diff cover, have a drain pan underneath to catch the gear oil. Place the trans in nuetral, chalk the front wheels to keep vehicle from moving if you forget to put it back into park befor you lower the vehicle. Rotat the differential until you see the bolt that holds the diff pin in place. Remove the bolt, 5/16 or 8 mm I believe. You can then remove the diff pin, do not rotate the diff with the diff pin removed! Push the axle in, you can then remove the C-clip that holds the axle to the side gear, it will usuall drop or just fall out. Pull the axle out of the rear diff and replace the seal. Put everything back together. Use black or grey RTV to reseal the diff cover making sure o clean up both surfaces as best you can. Put trans in park. Lower the vehicle. Remove the fill plug from the side of the differential and fill with gear lube until lube comes out the hole. Reinstall the plug and your good to go. If you are going to change the gasket, you should also change the filter at the same time, especially if it hasn't been done recently. You will need a large drain pan to catch oil in because there is no drain plug. Remove the bolts down both sides of the trans pan, 1/2" I believe, and loosen the back ones 3 or 4 turns. Loosen and slowly remove the bolts on the front of the pan because oil will start to drain from there. Once the oil has drained remove the back bolts and drop the pan. clean it out good and check for "stuff". It's normal to see silver filings in the oil but an excessive amount or actual pieces indicate a problem. Two screws should remove the filter. Replace it and put the new gasket on and set the pan in place. Bolt it on. Torque specs for these bolts are 12-13 ft.-lbs for the Turbo 350 and 400. The 700R4 is torqued to 18 ft.-lbs.

If you have trouble getting at the rear bolts on the trans pan, you may need to unbolt the trans mount and lift the tailshaft a little with a jack to get enough room to get it there. Be gentle doing it.Hope this helps.

Hello skullz, this is a fairly big task but it can be done in your driveway. Take your time, keep track of all your parts you remove. Use masking tape and a sharpie to label stuff if you feel like it will make easier to reinstall....These steps are for a 99 blazer 4x4 with an aluminum pan. You wont need to do some of the shift linkage removal due to the AWD and electronics the Olds has.

Disconnect battery and remove battery tray. Disconnect shift cable at actuator. Raise and support vehicle.

Remove underbody shield from steering linkage and engine oil pan. Drain crankcase. Remove starter motor.

Remove oil cooler pipes and both front wheels. Disconnect electrical connector and remove wiring harness bracket at shift cable housing.

Remove 3 shift cable housing bolts and disconnect shift cable from differential carrier. Remove both front drive axles. Remove differential housing.

Remove 10 oil pan bolts, 2 nuts at crankshaft rear oil seal and remove 2 transmission to oil pan bolts....Remove oil pan from vehicle....When you reinstall & tighten the oil pan bolts, start in the middle of the pan and go back to the bellhousing, directly across from each bolt---left, right, left right...then, from the middle towards the front of engine, right, left, right left...Torque to 18 ft/lbs

disconnect battery, put cars on jack stands, remove tires, remove axle nut on both axles, unbolt lower ball joint, pry down to remove from knuckle, side strut to remove shafts from trans, unbolt starter, bell housing bolts, clutch slave cylinder,support motor, pull back and turn trans about 8 degrees counterclockwise lower trans, remove pressure plate bolts to remove plate and disc,

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Drain the engine oil.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   Negative battery cable 2 Top intake manifold bracket bolts Front 3 axle housing mounting bolts, 4WD only Left front bushing from the axle housing mount and lower the front axle housing Both gusset plates from the engine Transmission under cover Engine under cover Oil pan mounting bolts and using a scrapper tool separate the oil pan Oil pan Oil strainer assembly Oil baffle

1. Clean the engine block, oil pan and baffle pan surfaces of any gasket material.
2. Apply a continuous bead of Loctite Ultra Blue 587® silicone sealant around the baffle pan.
3. Install or connect the following:
   
   Oil baffle. Torque the bolt to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm). Oil strainer. Torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm).
   
4. Apply a continuous bead of Loctite Ultra Blue 587® silicone sealant around the oil pan.
   
   Oil pan. Torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm). Transmission under cover. Torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm). Gusset plates to the engine. Torque the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Engine under cover Front axle housing into position. When properly aligned, torque the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Intake manifold bracket bolts. Torque the bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Negative battery cable
   
5. Fill the engine with clean oil.
6. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

OIL PAN
REMOVAL
Drain engine oil.
Remove front engine mount bracket.
Remove power-train bending strut.
Remove structural collar from oil pan to trans-axle Structural Collar - Removal and Installation
Remove trans-axle lower dust cover.
If equipped with air conditioning, remove oil filter and adapter.
Remove oil pan.
Clean oil pan and all gasket surfaces.
INSTALLATION
Apply Mopar® Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent at the oil pump to engine block parting line Oil Pan Sealing
Install a new oil pan gasket to pan.
Install pan and tighten screws to 12 N·m (105 in. lbs.)
Install oil filter and adapter.
Install trans-axle lower dust cover.
Install power-train bending strut.
Install front engine mount and bracket
CAUTION: The torque procedure for the structural collar must be followed, as damage to oil pan or collar could occur.

Install the structural collar Structural Collar - Removal and Installation using the following 3 step torque sequence:
Step 1: Install the collar to oil pan bolts and tighten to 3 N·m (30 in. lbs.)
Step 2: Install collar to trans-axle bolts and tighten to 108 N·m (80 ft. lbs.)
Step 3: Final torque the collar to oil pan bolts to 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.)
Fill engine crankcase with proper oil to correct level.

Auto Zone carries the Oil pan you need for around $75.00 and they will have the step by step instructions for you to replace the oil pan. will take just over 2 hours for the average person. Good luck and keep me posted.

support front of vehicle, drain oil and return to oil recycling center (walmart) remove both (right and left) motor mounts and transmision linkage, transmision support bars( if needed for extra clearance ) unbolt oil pan. carefully lif engine from frame, taking care not to hit and break anything when the engine gets too close to your firewall. you should then be able to remove and replace oil pan. you'll need the bolt tightening pattern and torque specs for your vehicle. hope this helps

-Remove tire and brake drum
-put drain pan under axle housing
-remove rear axle housing cover (10 or 12 bolts)
-turn gear untiil the bolt for cross shaft shows and remov e the bolt
-remove the cross shaft.
-push axle in until you can remove "U" clip from axle and axle will pull out,
Remove seal, you need a pulller to remove axle brg.

Follow the steps below.

1. Drain the engine oil.

2. Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable

2 Top intake manifold bracket bolts

Front 3 axle housing mounting bolts, 4WD only

Left front bushing from the axle housing mount and lower the front axle housing

Both gusset plates from the engine

Transmission under cover

Engine under cover

Oil pan mounting bolts and using a scrapper tool separate the oil pan
