My 1995 subaru legacy lsi cuts out when I rev the engine around 1 rpm. Plus the check engine light is on. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't fix it, but they got a code from the check engine light. The code is p0441, it says it is an evap system leak but where could it leak causing the engine to cut out at 1 rpm? Basically when I rev the engine around 1 rpm it will want to cut out and then it dosent, as if you pushed on the gas and then took your foot off the pedal repeatedly.Please help!

P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses.

  • Charcoal Canister (vapor storage)
  • Purge Control Valve (open/close)
  • Canister Purge (process of engine vacuum pulling fuel vapors into engine) determined by control valve
  • Vacuum Switch (detects when flow exists)
ALL CONTROLED BY ENGINE COMPUTER, (ECM/PCM Engine/Powertrain Control Module)

The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

EVAP emission canister purge is controlled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere.

A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the ECM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.
Symptoms Likely, no symptoms will be discernible to the driver, other than the illuminated Check Engine Light. Causes A code OBDII Trouble Code

P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • Bad vacuum switch Broken
  • damaged EVAP line or canister
  • Open in ECM purge command circuit
  • Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Faulty purge solenoid Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
  • Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
  • Bad ECM
The EVAP Control System seems complicating, but rather simple once you can route the components and connection hoses.

If engine seems to want to stall at low idol speed (rpm), could be due to a vacuum air leak near/around or on the air intake manifold, or connecting vacuum hoses and/or lines.
*Could also be the vacuum line leading to charcoal canister.
This will cause lower vacuum suction of air intake and loss of compression in motor, will cause unstable idle.
Also Canister Purge relies on intake vacuum to syphon fuel vapors into the engine.

A vacuum air leak on intake manifold / connecting components / hoses / lines will cause
-low intake air preassur
-low air compression in motor
-unstable idol
-low vacuum suction will reduce EVAP vapor flow
-trigger MIL Light EVAP Inccorect Purge Flow

No MIL light for vacuum leak.

Check The Vehicle Speed Sensors.

The Legacy has 2 Vehicle Speed Sensors (VSS): VSS1 is located inside of the transaxle; VSS2 is located in the combination meter assembly.

VSS1

  1. Disconnect the electrical harness from the transaxle.
  2. Connect an ohmmeter across the transaxle's electrical harness terminals 9 and 16.
  3. The resistance should be 450-650 ohms.
  4. After testing, reconnect the electrical harness.
VSS2
  1. Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the speedometer cable from the instrument cluster.
  3. Connect an ohmmeter or continuity tester across the combination meter terminals 7 and 11.
  4. Insert a small screwdriver in the speedometer cable drive socket.
  5. Rotate the speedometer drive and note the continuity across the VSS terminal. Continuity should turn ON/OFF 4 times per speedometer drive revolution.

Yes as long as the Motors are the same. You might need to have the computer out of doner car. Doors are suppose to fit 96 to 99.

It's in 'safe mode'. Fault 66 is a nightmare! Usually caused by the sensors not talking to each other properly or 'disagreeing' with each other. Check all the sensors are pluged in & have good connections. A dirty connection can cause this code to appear. Disconnect the battery & touch the + & - leads together to discharge the system & reset the computer & fault codes

Test the purge valve and the vent valve for leaks. This can only be done with a Tech 2 and or a vacuum pump.

It has to be jerked just right for them to lock. Foreign cars are real touch when you **** them. American cars pretty much only lock up when you stop quickly and your whole body puts pressure on the belt.

I'm not sure you can. Talk to a Subaru parts guy at a dealership. What I can tell you for sure is this: I replaced the passenger side visor on a '94 Legacy Lsi that was torn off when the car was stolen and driven from WV to FL. I couldn't find a used one and the insurance company wound up paying 135 bux for an original equipment replacement. Good luck. . .

1995 subaru legacy at 1 on the rpm gauge moving or in park it wants to stall out after it go pasts 1 it will drive okay.. but before it will wanna kept cutting out

it might be a bad TPS (throttle position sensor). it operates similarly to a volume control knob on a radio. as you accelerate the butterfly on the throttle body opens to allow more air into the engine, as you would turn up the volume on the radio. there could be "flat spot" on the sensor. they can be checked with a scan tool with real time display. if the sensor is bad it needs to be replaced.

Hi, I have a '95 2L Legacy Boxer 2 stage twin Turbo. When i'm driving and the engines reving at ot just above 2000 rpm I'm getting a dip in power for a moment before it picks up again. I haven't noticed...

the 1st thing that needs to be done here is to find what fault code is turning on the check engine light, this information is absolutely crucial to making an accurate diagnosis of this problem, guessing is not an option as each part that could cause this is very hard to replace and very expensive, so get the the engine control system tested, this is what is called OBD 1 electronic engine control and requires a Subaru scanner to read code.

The RPM's are revolutions per minute. So when you step on the gas, the RPM's should rev high. Not going into gear is a safety feature,

Where is the no2 sensor located?on a subaru legacy 1995 lsi with a 2.2 liter motor.

there is more than one on this car a sensor one and sensor two the first one is either mounted in the exhaust manifold off the engine or just below it the second one is further back by the catalytic convertor in the exhaust pipe.

The '92 Subaru Legacy uses a distributorless ignition system. No adjustment is possible/necessary. The computer adjusts the timing continuously.

You can check the timing if you have a timing light. The spec for engines with a turbo charger is 15 degrees plus or minus 8 degrees at 700 RPM. Non-turbo engines are 20 degrees plus or minus 8 degrees at 700 RPM.
