The 2005 altima 2.5 175 hp 4 cylinder CVTC and the 250 hp 3.5 VQ35DE V6 both use timing chains.,NOT a timing belt. They also have hydraulic chain tensioners and oil pressure controlled solenoids that operate the camshaft timing.I have seen 1/2 litre low oil levels trip a po340 camshaft sensor code or ,limit the rpm to 2200 and put the vehicle in limp mode..a timing chain job needs 500 in parts and 10 hours labor. To do a proper job, replace the water pump,,tensioner and the chain guides.
It might be better to replace the engine with a good used one with low kms

You need to know if your car engines is a interference motor first !! An interference motor is when the timing belt breaks while you are driving and the valves stop but the piston heads keep going up into the valves and destroys them and the heads that hit them. Usually for a mechanic will charge you about 50 or 60 dollars an hour so he has the book that tells him how long it will take to replace the timing belt so go call several of them they will say the same thing trust me I have called many of them in the past myself.

I have a 2005 V6 Altima. It makes a whining noise when I drive it. If I am coming down a steep hill, the sound I hear is like the gear is stuck and not shifting correctly. When I had my oil replaced...

sounds to me like they are right on the money. its a pretty common issue on 3.5 litre engine in a altima, maxima murano and quest. you do need upper timing chains and chain tensoiners. its unfortunate that those cars have an issue, but thats what you need. nissan has been pretty reliable vehicle until the new models came out (1999 and up). The upper timing chains are known to go bad even in some 4.0 litre engines. good luck with that, that is a job that requires some car knowledge and mechanical skill to get it done.

I have 134000 miles on my 2005 Altima and the dealer repair told me the timing chain needs to be replaced. Is this a defect or just a maintenance issue?

Good Afternoon, replacing the timing on your vehicle is not a defect, it is more preventive maintenance due to the constant wear and tear on it. Considering the mileage on your 2005 that is a lot of driving and I would recommend it myself as well and all that it will do is add some more longevity to your vehicle. Hope this helps.

I just brought my 05 maxima (with 85,000 miles) into the dealer for an air conditioning fix. With the inspection, they noted that there was a sound at start up with the timing chain and tensioners. I was...

this is very difficult to weigh in on without actually hearing the sound. also, if your altima has the 3.5 l engine, it is the exact same engine as in the maxima. typically, if you have been changing your oil as you should (every 3000 miles) you should not be having this problem, but anything is possible. if you have any doubt, get a second opinion, for that kind of money i certainly would. good luck!

00 SE Altima, Is it the timing chain or the motor or both??

If the engine spins over very fast like it is not under any kind of pressure then the timing chain/belt has failed. There is a considerable amount of damage that can accrue when this happens. You may not be able to replace the chain/belt and repair the problem now. It may actually be cheaper to replace the motor now than repair the old one. So they may both be correct. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Timing chain noise on nissan altima 2005 change oil for syntetic 5 w 30 and it got worse before did it only when cold now is doing it at all the times

The timing chaing noise is very common on almost all v6 nissan engines. There is a significant difference for the maxima's though.

Timing chain noise is very common and it is the result of the secondary timing chain tensioners. They often stick and put too much tension on the chain and the plastic guides for the tensioner wear down to metal and that is the noise you hear.

At Nissan, I have performed this replacement many times and I suggest you take it to the dealership to have it fixed.
