If you follow the large battery positive wire along you will end up at the starter motor when you come to the end of it at the motor.

About your galant 1997 model you just remove the starter behind the carburetor you shoud insure that all the wires and hoses cannot deseminate while you are removing your starter but becarefiul you should first off the swithch and disconnect the bataerry wires connecting to the starter thnks
Before you start, be sure to disconnect the battery. The starter is located between the firewall and the engine, underneath fuel injection assembly. Stick your hand in there and you should be able to feel how the starter is positioned. There are 2 or 3 bolts holding the starter and they're easy to remove. You need to disconnect the wire on the starter coil (the coil is located on top of the starter itself).
Now the fun part: removing the the starter itself. The way I did it is by wriggling it out the open space on the left side of the engine, hence the tight fit. Move any cables or wires that may get in the way for more room. (Important advice: Remember, patience is a virtue!)And there ya go! To install/re-install the starter just do the reverse. It's a lot easier to put it back in than removing it.

If you follow the large positive wire from the battery it always leads to the starter. Take a look at the new one in the store so you have some idea what you are looking for.
