The rear lift gate on my 2006 Lincoln Navigator will not open automatically or manually and there appears to be no way to access anything inside the door from inside or out.

I had already tried all you suggested and the gate will not open.

I realize there is something wrong with the mechanism inside the door.
My question is, how do I get the lift gate open so I can assess the problem?

The rear lift gate on my 2006 Lincoln Navigator is closed and locked. It will not open. When the button is pressed on the remote key fob I can hear the mechanism moving but the gate neither unlocks nor opens and it will not open manually. My question is, how do I get the gate open so I can assess the problem inside. The former expert's suggestion that I take it to a local tech only evaded the question. Nothing could have been more obvious or unneeded. I want to know how to effect the repair myself.

There is no key lock on this lift gate.
I understand what the problem is!
I want to know how to get the gate open (Is there an emergency release?).
If not, how can I to the interior of the door without first opening it?

Sound like a problem with the latch or lock system; first try to Diagnosis & Testing:

  1. Check all fuses.
  2. Inspect all grounds are clean and tight.
  3. Search for applicable service bulletins.
  4. Check for voltage and ground at suspected actuator motor.
  5. With fused connection add voltage and ground to actuator motor. Reverse connections. Actuator motor should operate accordingly if not suspect motor.
If this dont work, just try to take off the interior trim panel (remove the clips) to check latch, cables and other components that maybe need some adjust. I dont have any diagram about this, sorry.

Keep us updated.

POWER LIFT-GATE OPERATION - To open the optional power liftgate, push the button on the instrument panel , press on your five-button key fob (if equipped), or press and release the control located in the left rear quarter panel (Figure B). To unlatch the liftgate glass, push the button ) under the center of the license plate lamp shield, or press on your five-button key fob. Do not open the liftgate or the liftgate glass in a garage or other enclosed area with a low ceiling. Keep clear of the liftgate when operating the rear switch. To open the liftgate manually, pull the handle located on the liftgate to release the liftgate from the vehicle. The power system will take over when you release the handle. To close, make certain the rear window is closed, and then pull down the liftgate a few inches to activate power closing. Closing the gate rapidly or more than a few inches may activate the obstacle detection feature and stop the power system.------------ Also click this link for more help:--- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/05/power-liftgate-on-will-not-open-on.html ------------ This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

Sounds like the linkage the is not unlocking the latch assembly .The lift gate assembly has to be disassemble by local tech and latch has to be released. If the latch is cracked or broken, then it has to be replaced. If it just got locked, then no need to replaced.Try open/ close rear power lift gate few times, this will confirm the problem.--------
    This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.
