Four years later, this answer will be for anyone else interested. And just a guess. First, the mere act of dripping some anti-freeze on a belt or pulley can lead to squealing that will stay that way for a long time.

Lacking the above remedy, after removing the belt, try spinning the power steering pump pulley to make sure it rotates easily. Bearings could be shot. That could make the belt slip while struggling to spin the pump. Also any bearings in the idler pulley.

If not there, check alignment of the pulley with the other things (other pulleys) it wraps around. Alignment is checked with a two-piece laser tool (e.g: Dayco). Or I saw recommended merely tying a string around two areas to see where they cross in the middle. Look up that idea for better instructions.

Sqealing

Two things to check. If your car has a harmonic pulley on the crank shaft check that it is not slipping on the rubber insert and squealing. Second point is when there is no need for power steering ie straight ahead or idling there is no load on the pump so it will feel ok but as soon as you move the position of the steering wheel the valves close off and the pump comes under load. If the drive belt only drives the power pump and it broke then I would suspect a problem in the pump. Check that the belt is the correct size for the pulley groove as if it is too small the belt will run on the bottom of the pulley and slip, and squeal.

05 legacy sqealing sound when I'm stopped and turn

All symptoms of a loose or worn drive belt. As the belt wears, it develops slick spots that slip instead of grab. Since the main drive belt drives the power steering and alternator, this would be consistent with your issue.

2008 escalade sqeals. Had the belts changed but didn't help. Only happens when moving. Mechanic can't figure it out!

just check first that which belt sqeals, if its the AC belt then your compressor might b hard so replace it and if its the other belt then jst check your pulleys and bearings they might have gone hard.. if u can replace them its the best but if u can not then simply apply some grease on the belt which is sqealing.. thanks

Belt sqealing on my 1999 cougar.

Do you know which belt is making this noise? Usually it's the power steering belt, and sometimes it's the alternator belt. The power steering belt will make noise turning the steering wheel when stationary, the alternator belt will slip as you quickly rev the engine by blipping the throttle. In either case tightening the belt to the specified tension will fix the problem.

Loud squealin from power steering belt

Check the tension of the power steering belt.
It is probably loose and slipping - belts can stretch during their initial run in period.

Mercury villager belt tension

it is possible on some cars to over tighten or under tighten but on your van i believe the tension er is spring loaded which means you cannot over or under tighten because the spring keeps the belt the right tension. and as far as $580 i think that is extremely to high. i don't think you need to replace anything
