If your Rack and Pinion is worn it could do this, if the Fluid is OLD, it could also do that. How much Power Steering is there? Did you hit anything? Could your have bent a Control Arm or Tie Rod End or could the Power Steering Pump just have gone out? Remove the Cap and see if there is Air Bubbles and Movement inside your Pump Reservoir? Are you sure you are checking the Right Reservoir? Any of the above could be the cause.
Hey more than likely power steering pump is low on power steering fluid, locate power steering fluid reservoir under bonnet and refill with genuine subaru power steering fluid.
Did u check the belt going into the power steering pump?
Check the tension of the belt.
Let somebody ride on the driver seat, engine is running, and let him/her turn the steering, look at the fluid if it is moving.....
all power steering fluid is the same actually us can use transmission fluid if u want now being as you had to add fluid i would assume u have a leak some where in the system you may be low on fluid also there probably air in system (when u have a leak it also allows air into system especially when you run low on fluid) also if anyone ever put stop leak in system stop leak is a lot thicker oil and will take longer to heat up and thin out in cold weather to allow easy turning first check for leaks repair if needed if no leaks are found drain system add fresh power steering fluid if that doesn't fix problem you have a bad power steering pump replace pump
Have you checked the power steering container, to make sure you have power steering fluid in it?
The steering will be feeling heavy, and hard to steer the car, if the power steering fluid is too low, or empty.
eithor you have blown a power steering hose or the pump itself has gone out on you also check the power steering fluid level make sure its at the full line look for fluid all around the pump signaling a leak
I have a similar problem. The power steering felt jerky just the moment you start and drive off. My mechanic flushed out the old fluid with a power steering flush fluid and replenish with new fluid and that did the trick. The old fluid looked clean in the resovior but down in the steering rack, its a different story. The fluid is dark and contained some sludge. No wonder the steering assist was jerky.
Is the belt for the power steering pump tight?
