My 2004 Chevy Ampala is burning alot of gas what can I do

if coil packs are ok. change the spark plugs.

I think you mean ECM for engine computer.
Has anyone checked fuel pressure with a gauge ?

this obd2 trouble code table can help u understand the meaning of code.
Input and output speed sensors in the transmission are the most likely cause, They fail alot, relatively cheap to repair, if left ignored can burn up the transmission.

A tune up and new spark plugs would definitely help.

Could be many things. I know this is not much of an answer but you need to have scan done to get the "Trouble code" which will most likly give you your answer or at least point you in the right durection. You don't have a simple problem. Engine light has to be read by a scanner (OBDII) available at autoparts store. Or take to mechanic. After you get code you'll have to be a mechanic to fix problems. Burns lots of gas can be many different causes. Miss in motor, same. Please take to professional if this is beyond your knowledge. Good luck!

the other trick the gas companies play on us is they add alot of alcohol to the fuel to help it not to freeze...unfortuneatly we get no mileage from that alcohol. but we do pay for it.... soooooo in essence ya car getting same mpg as it was...sort of.... just less burnable fuel for you.......

common problem. replce the gas cap first easy and cheap. if you drive where it is wet alot and or you get pine needles on your truck the knock sensor rust. it is under the intake manifold. not an easy job but can be done in 4 hours. replace both as a set.

you may have bad o2 sensors, also when was your last tune-up?

you might check the crank and cam sensors
