SOUND LIKE FUEL PUMP NOT WORKING.CHECK FOR FUEL PRESSURE SHOULD HAVE 47 - 51 PSI..IF FUEL PRESSURE IS LOW REPLACE FUEL FILTER.IF FUEL PRESSURE LOW REPLACE FUEL PUMP.IF FUEL SYSTEM OKAY.CODE SCAN VECHICLE FOR FAULTY CMP SENSOR AND CKP SENSOR.SCAN FOR FAULTY PCM AND FAULTY IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE.

That is an easy fix. It is your choke. The choke is not getting power. I just picked up an 84 with the 4cyl, had the same problem. Did some trouble shooting and figured it out rather quickly. The person that had it before me actually put a new choke on trying to fix the problem, but didn't check to see if it was getting power. I re-wired the choke strait to the fuse box on an accessory fuse. Has been working great every since.
It is at least worth checking out.
