There are a number of reasons why the ses light can come on. In my opinion, the best thing to do is to read the codes with a scan tool. Some parts stores will do this for free, especially if the vehicle is OBDII (made after 1995). Reading the codes will help to determine the best place to start looking for the problem. Some of the causes are : sensor reading out of range, fuel trim out of range, emission control problem, PCM failure.
