I once had a ford focus have a very similiar problem, turned out the battery cables being severely corroded and lose was the culprit. check them battery cables!

try unplugging and replugging in the connector going to it near the #6 fuel injector connector. then try restarting . 30% of time will crank and start enough to get you home or parts storeinvestigating your problem a little more...

Not sure I follow your story. A 97 Jeep would have a distributor so there is no cam sensor.
Do you know if you are loosing fuel or spark when it fails to start ?
Have you checked the asd relay ?
The first two things you need to do is check for gas and check for spark. Make sure that fuel is getting to the engine by checking the fuel pump, checking the fuel filter, the gas lines, and the injectors. If you engine is getting gas, then you need to make sure you are getting spark. Check the spark plugs/coils, wires, distributor, dist. cap, roter, cam sensor, crank sensor, timing belt. Anyone of these can be bad and cause your car to not start. Your best bet is trying to get a code from your computer. If you can't, just start checking them one by one.
If you did not replace the CRANK sensor on the back side of the motor this most likely is the problem and a very common one at that.this controls spark and injector pulse, unlike the cam sensor which just shows when #1 cilyder is up.
Reaching your Findings I would go to Checking the The Idea of Timing chain Problem #1 Top Dead Center on Compression stroke, remove dist cap and see where Rotor is Pointing, it should be pointing at #1 Plug wire if not Timing chain & Gear Replacement time. If all Is Well there PLEASE Confide in Me I would Love to Help Thats My Mission here Good Night and Take life EASY, Rejakwilson
