Adding power steering fluid to a 1999 Buick Regal

Do you mean the engine overheat warning? The power steering problem is most likely a defective steering rack, they always act up when hot due to internal seal leakage and fluid bypassing the seal.

So you don't change the power steering fluid
every 3 years?

Maybe the steering rack has now failed & the noise
is the pump straining to turn it

power steering fluid is usually transmission fluid, if you use a fluid that is too thin it can cause this problem,the power steering reservoir is under the hood.....hope this helps.....cheers.

I would first of all check the power steering fluid.

Check the fluid level in your power steering pump reservoir. Sounds like you may have air in the pump.

You will find the power steering pump at the front of the engine, ( that is to say where the belts are ). It is a black plastic knob with a dip stick attached. Remove it, wipe it and reinsert it with the engine off. Remove it again and note the level on the level indicator on the stick. Use only GM fluids. If you still can't find it then think backwards..There are ony so many things that you can fill under the hood. Engin oil, Transmission fluid, Windshield washer fluid, brake fluid. If you find all of them pretty much the only on let is steering fluid.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. If you have your owner's manual there is a picture on page ;6-29 of your power steering fluid reservoir. If you do not have your owners manual download this manual:
http://www.extendedgmwarranty.com/owners-manual/buick/1999-Buick-Regal.pdf and go to page 269 to see the picture. It will be in front of the engine driven by a belt on the left front side closer to the fender well and radiator. (Left front corner of the engine) NOTE the full mark on the dip stick.

On another note... with the car NOT RUNNING.... place a finger on the power steering drive belt mid-span between the drive pulleys and check for deflection. If it mores more than 1 inch as you gently depress the belt.;.. then the belt is loose and it will need re-tensioned. Most of the time this is the cause of the noise your hearing.

the pump is located on the left hand side of the car lower front part of engine

The power steering fluid reservoir is behind and below the alternator in the rear of the engine bay. Its very hard to get to and see without a flashlight. A piece of hose or tubing is necessary to add fluid to the reservoir from above.

there is a recall from the dealer that they will fix this
