SES lights are mostly just "HEY I NEED AN OIL CHANGE" warnings...or some other standard maintenance. Only your dealer or an independent shop with BMW OEM CDI tools can reset this.

I have a 2001 BMW 325 which has developed a rough idle with the service engine light soon indicator on. Also when the hood is opened you can hear an intermittent what sounds like a metal on metal knock...

Think this engine has had its day, could be a hydraulic valve adjuster ,well the noise anyway but as for the rough idle i have no idea without my head inside the engine compartment
Could even be a piston who knows as these type of cars do get well thrashed about by budding F1 drivers ,if you can video it and post the video then i might have a better idea failing which ask a local mechanic to have a look for you

Just took BMW in and replaced catalytic converters - both. Now Check Engine Light is on. How do I tell what the CEL is indicating for repair?

i hope you didn`t change them because the light was on without having it checked out.you need to have the code pulled from the computer to know what its telling you to have checked as without it you won`t know what area to start the diagnoises in.

What type of oil do I use in my 2003 325I BMW and how do I reset the service engine light?

Most probably it is synthetic oil ad unless you own the tool to open the computer you will need a BMW tech to reset the light or at least a certified BMW mechanic.

Dear Sir/Madam: Would u pls let me know what possible causes, defects or problems would be when I get this sign on the panel: "SERVICE ENGINE SOON". Previously I wrote "CHECK ENGINE SOON". Sorry!!!!.

your maintenance service is overdue and that triggers the dash warning.  The mileage triggers these alerts an good maintenance shop can reset them.  Have your oil and other services done
