Hi :) Sounds like the clutch pack if the machanic didn't setup the T.V. Cable The right way the hydraulic pressure wouldn't be properly set and as you are driving the clutches would be slipping everytime they change gears and since you use 3rd and 4th the most they go first.

If you have third but not fourth and the car will go in revese, and pull foward in Third, Second, and First, we know the pump is good, the reverse clutches are good, the foward clutch is good, but take a look at the difference is first gears for OD, and Third. Third, Second, and First, the overrun clutch is applied. The purpose of the overrun clutch in essence is to lock the sprag together, so that there is engine braking. Because of this, we can deduce that in OD, the foward sprag was not holding like it was supposed to, but by putting it into Third, the overrun clutch applies, thus overriding the sprag allowing the car to move foward. The sprag is faulty and needs replaced.

The servo's on the right side of the transmission under the round cap has a second gear servo and a fourth gear servo that operates the band for 3rd and 4th that can be replaced without removing the transmission from the automobile this could be the problem and the easiest and cheapest to fix.

2001 mustang gt on expressway wouldn't go into passing gear engine race high pulled over put in park then worked

Check level and condition of your transmission fluid. If your transmission fluid is turning brown or if your vehicle has not had a transmission fluid and filter change in 5 years or 50,000 miles, do that right away before you fry your transmission.

I have a 1981 ford f150 4x4 with a 302 engine An automatic transmission that works fine shifts properly going forward But when I put it in reverse I hear a clunk and sometimes it goes into gear and...

If the transmission was rebuilt 2 years ago the fluid and filter did not need to be changed. In a 1981 there are no trouble codes to retrieve so whoever suggested that is out to lunch, Unfortunatley you need to get the transmission rebuilt again, hopefully it gets done better this time. Using the dexron oil in Ford transmissions is something transmission shops do because they don't want to stock different fluids. While it's not likely that using dexron oil lead to the failure it would be better to use mercon or type F oil.

Had transmission rebuilt now it shifts into passing gear when starting out and after it is driven about thirty miles it when trying to shift into third the rpms go way up and speed goes down

take it back to the mechanic who rebuilt it-if he's worth his salt he should stand behind it -if not, time to find a new mechanic-cheers Denny

Try changing the fluid in the transmission first this may solve it, if you are not sure when it was changed.

Automatic Transmission Rough Shifting

From the sounds of it you need to have your transmission rebuilt, there is no quick fix for a fault in one gear. As far as the tapping noise goes quite often a oil change is all that is required to cure it.

No passing gear

My car did (past tense) the same thing. The service engine light is flashing until you let off the gas because raw fuel is being dumped into the catalytic converter. The transmission won't shift because the converter is plugged. When you push the pedal to the floor the transmission computer holds the transmission in gear. Meanwhile the engine computer is raising the rpms. It will seem like a transmission problem but it is more likely a plugged catalytic converter. I had converter changed. The engine has A LOT more power, great acceleration and the transmission shifts perfectly.
