I need to replace the exhaust manifold on a 1995 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0L HO engine. What are the torque specs for the bolts and is there a specific pattern?

Don't have a sendable diagram so here it is in words: Beginning with the bottom row, tighten the center bolt to the right of cylinder #4, then the one just to the left of cyl #3. Then the one directly above at the center of both. Continue by tightening the bolt to the left of cyl#2, then to the right of cyl#5 then the one to the front, left of cyl #1, then the remaining lower bolt to the right of cyl#6. Move to the top row, tightening the ont to the right of cyl #2, then the front, above cyl #1, then the rear ones, above cyl #5, then the far back one above cyl 6. Torque is supposed to be 24 foot lbs except bolts 6 and 7 but I've found it makes no difference. What I've found to be important though is to re check torque after running it up to operating temp and permitting it to completely cool down. Also, never tear it down while it's still hot. That promotes warping.

Both cases, exhaust manifold and new gasket, torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Replaced exhaust manifold on 99 jeep wrangler. turned ignition to start up and engine screams in full throttle, what could be the problem: vacuum, sensor???

The intake manifold is the common culprit for this. It may look like it is flush to the block, but it isnt and is causing a huge vaccum leak. There are two locating dowel pins that the manifold must be flush on before tightning the bolts. The usual problem is that the manifold is resting on top of these pins instead of flush, causing a gap. You have to unbolt the intake and exhaust manifolds, relocate the intake and replace the bolts.

What is the torque specs for a 1998 jeep Cherokee classic straight 6 4.0 liter? I am replacing the head gasket and need to find the lbs of torque. Thank you for any advice, pictures, etc.

Torque sequence ------------------ front | 12 8 4 1 5 9 13 | of | | engine | 11 7 3 2 6 10 14 | ------------------ Final torque must be reached in 3 equal steps Step 1: torque all bolts (except bolt 11) to 110 Ft/Lbs Step 2: torque bolt 11 to 100 Ft/Lbs Recheck final torque in sequence.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Disconnect the hoses at the thermostat housing.
  4. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  5. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  6. Loosen the rocker arms.
  7. Remove the pushrods.

The valvetrain components must be replaced in their original positions.
  1. Remove the intake and exhaust manifold from the cylinder head.
  2. Disconnect the spark plug wires and remove the spark plugs.
  3. Disconnect the temperature sending unit wire, ignition coil and bracket assembly from the engine.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt(s).
  5. Unbolt and set aside the power steering pump and bracket. Do not disconnect the hoses.
  6. Remove the intake and exhaust manifold assembly.
  7. If equipped with A/C, perform the following:
    1. Remove the compressor and position it aside with the lines attached.
    2. Remove the compressor bracket bolts from the cylinder head.
    3. Loosen the through bolt at the bottom of the bracket.

  8. Remove the alternator.
  9. Remove the cylinder head bolts, the cylinder head and gasket from the block.

Bolt No. 14 cannot be removed until the head is moved forward. Pull the bolt out as far as it will go and suspend in place by wrapping with tape.
  1. Discard the gasket. Thoroughly clean the head-to-block mating surface.
  2. Clean and inspect the cylinder head thoroughly. Refer to the engine reconditioning portion outlined later in this section.

To install:
  1. Coat a new head gasket with suitable sealing compound and place it on the block. Most replacement gaskets will have the word TOP stamped on them.

Apply sealing compound only to the cylinder head gasket. Do not allow sealing compound to enter the cylinder bore.
