1996 Isuzu Rodeo. 4 cylinder.California Emissions.It sat idling for about 8 hours.Engine light came on.Was able to start it again.Now it won't start.Bought a scan tool but it reads error when connected to ECM.Engine cranks but will not start.Was thinking due to excessive idling it might be an emission problem.

shutting off while in drive should not hurt anything-do you have dash lights when you turn the key on-will the engine turn over when you turn the key to start position-is it firing at all-let me know and I will try to help you-Denny
Normally a shop would use a scanner to watch the operation of the EGR valve and sensor. Code 401 means the sensor is telling the computer the flow is not enough. So the problem could be the sensor rather than the EGR valve. And yes one of the ports could be blocked too.

I have a 1996 holden rodeo 2.6 petrol, it misses badly on accelleration, I have replaced plugs, leads, distributor cap, and run injector cleaner through... it idles ok,,,,

intake .006 in (.15 mm)
exhaust .010 in (.25 mm)
Timing
1. With transmission in Neutral or park, start engine and warm to normal operating temp. turn eng,and all accessories off. connect Tachometer. Connect timing light to no 1 spark plug wire.
2. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister purge hose and EGR vacuum hose. Start and ensure idle is 900 RPM. adjust idle as required. Check ignition timing ( 12 @ 900)
3. If adjustment is required, loosen distributor hold down bolt and turn until timing is within specification. Tighten distributor hold down bolt and recheck timing. adjust idle speed as required.
