How to change the oil in your car

Attention: Read each step completely before you begin that task. Tools Required:
#1: Oil filter wrench or pliers
#2: Small wrench and sockets (Metric sizes for import cars)
#3: Oil collection device (pan or bucket)
#4: Funnel
#5: Cloth rag or paper towels
#6: Jack and stands or ramps
Supplies Required:
-Correct amount and type of oil, and thrust washer if necessary
-Correct oil filter
Step 1: Determine the correct oil type, oil filter type and size, and amount of motor oil for your car. (Information found in owner's manual)
Step 2: Park your car on level ground and turn off the engine.
Step 3: Locate the engine and make the oil pan accessible. (With the use of jack and stands or ramps) Tool #6 required.

Step 4: Remove oil cap. (Located on top on engine)

Step 5: Loosen oil drain plug. Collect oil when draining and dispose of properly. (Located on oil pan which is attached to the bottom of engine block, directly below oil cap)
Tool #2and 3 required
Caution: Oil will start to drain and may be hot

Step 6: Once completely drained (a slow drip), replace oil plug. Install new thrust washer with oil drain plug if necessary. Do not over tighten.
Tool #2 required
Step 7: Loosen oil filter. Collect oil when draining and dispose of properly. (Attached to the side or bottom of engine)
Tool # 1 and 3 required
Caution: Oil will start to drain and may be hot
Step 8: Install new oil filter hand tight. Lube the rubber O-ring on oil filter with motor oil, and make sure the O-ring from the old filter is not still on the oil filter connector.
Step 9: Pour correct amount of new motor oil into engine.
Tool#4 required
Step 10: Check for oil leaks from drain plug or oil filter.
Step 11: Turn on engine and continue to check for leaks. Tighten oil drain plug or oil filter if necessary.
Step 12: Turn off engine and check oil dip stick to see if the right amount of oil has been added. After removing oil dip stick, wipe clean with rag or paper towel. Reinstall oil dip stick and then remove again to see correct oil level. Then Reinstall oil dip stick again.
Tool #5 required
Step 13: Lower vehicle from jack and stands or ramps.
Step 14: Record the mileage of the car for future reference. (Motor oil should be replaced about every 3 months or 3,000 miles)

pull the neg. battery lug first.
the Plus battery lug rules are
last off , first on, or boom. acid burns. or worse. (seen many times)
you can look at it, its obvious on any car what you need.
or if really tool-less?
Read the FSM for every single step.
in my shop , i have 2 sets of metric spanners.
and 3/8 and 1./2" drive socket sets and one in deep wall.
so can do all jobs.
i cant imagine, just buying 1 socket and 1 wrench from Sears to do it. not at all, buy a set. and next time be ready.
when young, id be working to 2am fixing a car, no stores open ,with 1 DD , daily driver.
and point, 2, what if you have big arms and can grab it good.
you remove other parts to access it., and guess what, more tools,

for most cars its 2 wire lugs (nuts) spanner
and 2 wrenches on the flange nuts. 1 wrench and 1 1/2 drive.

I want to know how to service my 2000 Audi A3 myself. Oil change, oil filter change, plugs. What tools do I need?

You'll need some Metric wrenches and sockets and a rachet. Also, an oil filter wrench to fit your oil filter and a spark plug gapper. Don't forget to check the air filter and replace the fuel filter.

I need to know the size of the wrench (socket) in order to remove the oil drain plug

a cheap set of socket are your best bet as you will also get a socket wrench and extensions as well as a complete small sized set for future use

However it should be 1/2 inch
