one more question... where is the coolant temperature sensor located in the 90 isuzu?

  • yvonnemckenz May 01, 2011

could it be the battery as well? I think I will give checking the battery a try first as I am reading that changing the coolant temperature sensor is a difficult task. what do you think dttech?

You may want to take a hard look at your Coolant Temperature Sensor.

The coolant teperature sensor is not hard to replace. It simply unscrews once you have disconnected the electrical connector. Where exactly, it is located, depends on which engine your trooper is equipped with.

As for the battery theory, are we talking about an engine that cranks slowly? or are we talking about an engine that cranks OK but just takes a long time to start and run on its own? (By "cranks" I mean how the STARTER turns the engine.) If it is cranking slow, then YES, the battery could be the problem. If is cranks normally, then the coolant temperature sensor is a likely cause for it to take a long time to start. A coolant temperature sensor will usually also cause the engine to smoke black out the exhaust once it starts. The black smoke will usually clear up after the engine has warmed up a bit.

My 1994 Isuzu Pickup wont start when its below 32 degrees. Ive changed the gas filter, fuel pump, it just doesnt want to start when cold.

Below 32 degrees ( Fahrenheit , I presume) can cover a wide interval of temperatures. It could be the battery. You should consider installing a battery with a higher cranking power. In the colder parts of Canada, people install an engine warmer contraption. The device is kept connect to an electrical outlet overnight. In some places, it gets so cold that electrical outlets are available at some parking spots.

It may be a temperature sensor. You might have two,one for the computer, and one for the light or gauge. If the one for the computer is bad, it might think it's cold, and it will dump more fuel. On some GM models, applying the throttle will reduce fuel. You will need a scanner to verify this.

I have a 1995 izuzu trooper.it won't start on its own it will start with starting fluid.i have replaced fuelpump.ecm.fuelpump won't come on with key.it comes on when i put a hot wire to the fuse.i also...

TRY REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP RELAY. THIS SHOULD SEND POWER TO THE PUMP. IF NOT, THEN CHECK THE WIRING HARNESS NEAR THE FUEL TANK. I HOPE THIS HELPS. P.S.: IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, THE PCM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FUEL PUMP OPERATION. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. GOOD LUCK

Cold starts ok warms up shakes and stalls

check engine coolant temperature when it gets warmer, or at operating temperature, and verify that the temperature gauge is showing warmed up to operating temperature. If the coolant temperature sensor tells the computer the engine is cold it will over fuel and miss and the engine will die. When cooled down it will run fine until it warms up. Also could be coil if it starts missing after warmed up.

Hard to start when engine is cold

The thing you need to do is run a leak down test on the fuel pump overnight, hook up a fuel pump test guage to the fuel injector gas rail test port, run the engine, note the fuel pressure when you shut the engine off, it should not drop more than 5 PSI overnight, if it does you need a new fuel pump. Your car doesn't use a cold start valve, that was used on very early Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection systems, they where last used in the 80's
