Joel Bunce: the switch could be under the shifter gaitor or mounted to the transmission!

I would check the shifter and the linkage. Even though the shifter lever is moving, that doesn't mean it's moving the linkage on the transmission.

This is a complex problem.
Do you have any repair record of the Rodeo LS?
When is the last
ignition module change?
fuel pump change?
fuel filter change?
DO YOU TOP OFF during gas refuel?
DO NOT DO IT
Are you able to get the OBD-II codes off the ECU?
=======
I will check fuel rail pressure first to rule out the fuel pump
add Chervon fuel injector clear and fill gas to above 1/2 tank
locate the ignition module and apply GOOD amount of white lithium grease to help it from over heat.
When the truck stall again check the temperature of gauage......Engine should be below 195F
Let the module cool and see does it ran well again.
Good luck

Hi..I have a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo also...The problem is you need to replace the starter or rebuild it...It's best to just buy a new starter..Trust me on this..I had the same problem and did everything you did and more..From the research I had to go thru it's just best to buy a new one with a warranty..Just some advice if you do this yourself..The down y pipe on the exhust will have to be removed to do so..you must spray the bolts with wd-40 or pb blaster and let it soak over night...If not you will pull your arm out of it's socket trying..Also jacking the car up until the front driver side wheels are way up of the ground, This will give you a little more room to use a breaker bar to pop the nuts loose..I hope this helps you..Good Luck!!
SOURCE: My car is a manual transmission, it wont go into reverse or 5th,
Your shift linkage may just be falling apart or your clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing may be gone. Good luck.

Solved the problem myself. The new part which I purchased online at AutoZone.com is the incorrect part. They have the incorrect part listed in their system. I removed the "new" part and reinstalled the "old" part that was shorted which is why I replaced it in the first place. Once I reinstalled the old part, I could access all gears just fine. I've cut the wires off the old shorted switch so that it doesn't blow the fuse for the turn signals and cabin fan. I don't have back-up lights now, but I can live with that a lot easier than I can live without 5th and reverse gear. One disconcerting issue is that the part I purchased from AutoZone had a couple small pieced chipped off the end of it which obviously have fallen inside my transmission. They are very small pieces but it still concerns me what could potentially happen if they somehow end up in moving parts. I have driven the vehicle around about 20 miles in every gear except 5th and no issues at this point. Still, I worry.
Warning: If you have a failure of the reverse or back-up light switch DO NOT BUY A REPLACEMENT FROM AUTOZONE! They do NOT have the correct part listed in their computer system. It will mount in the location but is too long for application on a 1999 Rodeo like mine.
