This problem occured one morning. I had a code reader with me and connected, no error codes. Put a little gasoline in TBI and engine ran as long as someone squirted a bit in the intake, but not any further. Towed vehicle home, couple of days later all was well? engine started, and continued running. Can't trust this. I researched and found out there was an oil pressure switch which took over after initial start supplying fuel pump voltage. Pressure at fuel rail is approx 58 lbs with key on. Then I started engine, pulled fuel pump relay and engine fuel pressure died off and engine as well. Problem is, I can't locate this oil pressure/sender anywhere. It's supposed to have a three wire connector. Another problem, I can't really trust schematics for this model year suburban. Some indicate an oil pressure/sender, others only have an oil pressure sender, only source for fuel pump is from relay in fuse panel. I'm a bit confused and could use some help at this point since I don't want to get stuck in a remote location again.
Thanks,
Re: 7.4 liter mpfi engine starts, then shuts down.
The oil pressure sending unit should be located behind the distributor way in the back angled away from the engine, fuel filter been changed? www.aceautomotive1.com if you findd this information helpful please give me a good rating
if you like i can email you a diaggram and location of the sensor you need

No codes, but it was communicating? If no codes, it could be fuel pump. Have the fuel pressure checked. Do you hear it turn on for a couple of seconds, with key in on, not start? It should turn on briefly to pressurize the fuel lines and system. With key on, pressure should be pretty high, usually about 50 psi for MPFI.
The engine in this car is controlled by a computer, whenever a problem like this occurs a fault code is almost always recorded for the event in history memory of the computer. You need a shop to read this code and perform eh proper diagnostics report the problem. Knowing this make i would say the CKP sensor is defective.
Take it by an auto parts store like Auto Zone or O'Reilly Auto Parts and they can connect a reader to your car's computer and give you the codes. Write down the codes exactly as they say, and then find out what that code means for your model car on the internet.
It could also be wiring issues that is causing the error detected by the computer. It would be best to have a scanner connected to the diagnostic port of the car. The errors that can be retrieved should accurately identify which part the error occurred. Some shops would let you borrow their scanners.
With the check engine light on, it means trouble codes have been stored in the computer. Either rent/buy/borrow a code reader or if you can take it down to the local parts store to have it read (usually free). The error codes help point to the issue(s).
Sometimes you can reset the engine warning light by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or more (be sure you have your stereo unlock code if needed). That is not a good solution, it is better to diagnose and eventually fix the problem. Have the car computer scanned with a code reader, the codes you get in return witll tell you exactly where to find the problem.
Here is the code list.
To get the codes the code reader must be connected to the car computer.
sometimes on Bmw you may need a Interface 16 pin Adapter, depending on the code reader.
