I have a 2004 ford taurus that has 123000 miles. The engine light recently came on and it has started to vibrate when its stopped at lights or running idle. I went to pepboys and had the engine light checked. Its gave codes p0420 and p2196. What do those codes mean and is it fixable without breaking the bank.

Hello, Your Codes indicate that on Bank 1 your first O2 sensor is stuck on a Rich setting. The seond Code is showing your Catalytic converter on the same Bank 1 is not working very good.

Your Catalytic may recover once you fix the problem with the O2 sensor. This would mean replacing the Sensor. Once you change the part, have the onboard computer cleared with a scanner or disconnect the NEG terminal of the Battery for 10 minutes and then reconnect.

Have the autoparts man show you the special socket which may be needed to remove and install the Sensor and the location of the sensor. Prices for Catalytic converters have come down since they were first invented. Unlike a muffler, the Catalytics can be reused from a Salvage vehicle if you can find one. A site called Car-Parts.com can enable you to request used Salvage parts from many Salvage yards including the price, condition, and all the contact info you need.

I hope my solution is very helpful to you.

My 2004 ford taurus is 98 000 miles and the engine light is on the dashboard just now what i should do ?

You will need to put your car on a diagnostic fault code reader. The engine malfunction light will come on if there is a fault with the emissions if it runs ok and isn't misfiring it's probably a oxygen sensor fault or a catalyst fault. The light won't go out unless the fault is cleared

2004 ford taurus occasionaly wont start right up.

Can you tell me if it was in fact the starter? I have an 04 Ford Taurus with 99K miles on it. This week when I started it up, not everytime but often the abs, brake, tire and traction control lights will stay on. Also the computer display will read either park brake engaged or passenger door ajar. I turn it off and start it again and the issue goes away. This morning it acted as though it had a dead battery and I had the clicking sound behind the dash as well as the vibrating needles. Thanks!

Sounds like a catalytic converter needs to be checked out. How many miles on the engine?

Check Engine light

The easy fix? OK--here it is---remove positive battery cable--step on brake for 10 seconds, reconnect cable.

If it resets, get a code reader to see what the malfunction is. Remember---Volvo's remind you of oil change intervals by displaying that wonderful light!

BTW--at 123000 miles I would suspect the oxygen sensor is in dire need of replacement. Replace with Bosch only!

Check engine light is frequently a loose fuel cap, but the other problem could be a bad fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter. Try the fuel filter first - its the cheapest.
