Ford Focus ZX5 - Rear brake lights stay on when car is running and in gear

My ZX5 has developed a problem with the rear lights. I discovered that all my center bulbs were burned out and the housing is somewhat melted as if the lights were on for a very long time. Replacing them has no effect as it seems there is no power leading up to the unit at all.

That's when I discovered the bigger problem: When the engine is running/On and car is in PARK, nothing seems amiss. The brake lights (the ones not burned out) function normally. Step on the brake pedal and the lights come on. However, when the car is in Drive, Reverse, Neutral, or anything other than PARK, the brake lights are continually on without stepping on the pedal. Only use of the turn signal interrupts them. Any ideas? Thanks - TomR 2002 Focus SE Wagon. Exact same problem as TRocky describes, except third brake lights don't smell burnt. Problem was noticed Aug 8, same day as TRocky's posting. I'll add that flashers on have the same effect as turn signals.

I've tried replacing the Brake pedal/gearshift interlock switch with no change in outcome.

I have the same issue with a 2002 zx5, just wondering if you were installing aftermarket lighting when the issue first occured

When transmission in park, brake lights work great except high brake light doesn't come on. When transmission moved from park both lower brake lights come on and stay on till put in park again.

Hi, you have suffered a major electrical short here, and the car is telling you via the light signals that you need to take care of this in a garage. The original short burnt cables, which is why there is visible signs of melting, smell etc. I know it will involve a cost, but consider the value of your life if the car was to go on fire with you or your family in it? Another short will cause such a fire, get to a garage soon!

My 2002 ford focus zx5 Break lights are staying on and won't come out of park

Sounds like a defective brake light switch. This switch also helps control the shift lock for the gear shift. The switch is attached to the brake pedal. Try wiggling the switch/wiring to see if this corrects the problem. If so, I would recommend replacing the brake light switch as it will most likely happen again

My 2002 Ford Focus brake lights stay on in drive, cruise control doesnt work and the hatch button in car doesnt work. I noticed the middle rear brake light is also out.

If you brake lights stay on and the cruise control doesn't work then I would be looking at the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal as if there is power passing through it then it cuts out the cruise control. The same as if you put your foot on the brake cuts out the cruise control. The hatch button will be another problem like a fuse or broken cable or failed latch solenoid. As to the rear middle brake light try checking the bulb first.

are you sure you're not looking at the running lights? the running lights on the rear and the daytime running lights on the front are suppose to come on when the car is in gear and go out when the car is in park.

Ford Focus ZX5 - Rear brake lights stay on when car is running and in gear

You are the MAN, Just like you said TRocky, there was a short in the center brake light wiring. Found the short in the rubber boot that connects from the lift gate to the car. Inside that rubber boot the wires were cracked and some were shorting.Repaired the wiring and everything is back to normal.
