Dear Honda Tech, i am having a problem with the charging system in my car. i have replaced the alternator with a factory direct Honda alternator that was certified good at the honda dealership before being installed in the car. i have since takin it out again to have it retested at napa to make sure it haden't been damaged in shiping or instalation and it had not the test came back that the alternator was putting out the same as it was certified by honda to produce. so i then replaced my battery and also had it tested since this problem has been occuring to insure that the problem was not their. i then replaced my tremanils on my battery to insure a good connection. then i replaced the large ground wire going down from the negtive battery trminal to the bottom of the engine. i also replced the ground wire that runs from the frame of the car to the negative battery treminal. i also replaced the ground running from the top back driverside corner of the block to the frame. i replaced theis wires with the correct gauge and soldered on the leads. all the wires i replaced where because of large ammounts of corrosion. and i took the car back to the honda dealership after all of this and they told me the only thing they found wrong was the alternator's low voltage regulator was bad but when i got back home i took the alternator out took it to napa and had it tested again they told me it was working just as it should be to the factory specs and nothing was wrong with it but the car still won't keep a charge. but if i charge my battery all the way up then put it back in the car the car run's and drives fine and doesn't even have a problem starting. one thing though is i have removed my power steering pump and all that goes with it hoses ect. so not to cause any improper grounds by any chance. i also unhooked my a/c by removing the hoses and unhooking the wires witch are caped off saftly away from contacting any surface. and as a final step i took the care to auto zone and the guy came out hooked up the charging system tester /alternator tester hooked it up and told me the same thing i heard at the honda dealer ship that the low voltage regulater was gone in my alternator and that ti was only producing a 11.8 volt charge when it sould put out 14.2 volts i just can't figuer it out every thing independently is working fine but when it's in the car it won't charge i think it could have something to do with bad ground or hot wire plaese help thank you

Start the car. Pull off the negative battery cable, dont let it touch anything, just hold it in your hand. If the car dies go get an altenator. also check wire from alternator to battery for a problem.

Wow, some writeup-the voltage should be checked at the back of the alternator and the battery at the same time-if the pos post on the alternator reads 12.4 resting, that's what it should read at the battery too-and if it reads 14.4 volts running, at the battery, the alternator should read that too-if it does not (alternator reads 11.8, battery reads 12.40 it is the alternator. If the alternator reads 14.4 and the battery reads 12.4, the issue is wiring or the ecm is not allowing current to flow to the battery-there is an internal regulator in the alternator, but the ECM, if defective, can cause your issue. Check for relays or fuses that might be bad first, but it sounds like your ECM may be the problem and now you probably have another alternator issue which will have to be corrected first-then check the resting and running voltage at both places, and go from there. Testing an alternator off the car only proves it is good (or bad) off the car-therefore you need to determine what changes when mounted, and it can only be wiring (harness) , or control (ECM)

Hi, I am looking for help with my 2012 Honda Civic Si that has had a check charging system message for about a month now. It seems to start/run just as it always has. I replaced the ELD and I still have...

The standard alternator charging system is relatively crude and isn't really suited to the ancient lead-acid battery technology used on vehicles (because it is relatively cheap). The best that can usually be claimed for them is they keep a fully charged battery fully charged, though many don't accomplish that well when the battery is ageing.
The high internal impedance of the battery and the even higher internal impedance of an older battery means voltage regulation isn't the best way of doing things.

Smart charging systems go some way to addressing this drawback. The Honda system measures the current consumed by the car's electrical equipment and adjusts the output of the alternator accordingly.
If the battery is maintaining a good state of charge there probably isn't much wrong with the charging system.

When the system records a fault it is best not to guess but to have the fault code read and when repaired the fault should be erased. Many logged faults don't go away by themselves.

2012 honda civic wouldn't start this morning so, replaced the factory battery with new one. Garage read 12.6 v on alternator check and said alternator is bad as well. Is this a normal reading?

No. Charging voltage should be above 13 to 15. BUT, this vehicle has GM's power management feature. It only charges when it needs it. Read this post to see how it works. Ask the shop if they conducted the proper tests for this system.

Honda Element Ex 2008 needs seat belt replacement instructions

There a is replacement guarantee in place wherein Honda states that they will repair or replace your stock Honda seat belts for the "usable life" of the vehicle.

The "usable life" portion of the agreement establishes some requirements that have to be met and are listed here:

1. Vehicle has a current registration & insurance (Under Federal,
State, Local Laws).
2. Legally titled within the USA or Canada (Honda North America)
3. Never been totaled by insurance or Federal/State/Local standards
4. Never had an airbag deployment / isn't throwing a code for the
SRS system

This warranty is separate from all other factory warranties for the car. So, you car does not have to be under it's 3/36,000 or other factory equivalent. It is warrantied directly through Honda and not a third party company. Any Honda dealership within North America is required to replace or repair the belts free of charge. There should be no charge to you for inspection or replacement costs.

There have been reports about some dealerships attempting to charge a fee for the "diagnostic" process to determine if the seat belt is indeed malfunctioning. However under this warranty Honda does not allow the dealership to do this. So, you just have to stick to your guns and the dealership will not end up charging you anything.

They don't cover seat belts which have been:
1. Cut, Shredded, Frayed by long term physical contact with sharp
objects such as knives or belt buckles
2. Altered beyond factory specification
3. Altered from factory locations
4. Frayed by rubbing against interior trim pieces
5. Damaged by altered interior panels
6. Impeded upon by non-factory interior installations

They will cover the seat belt replacement even if you have taken your inside trim apart so long as you haven't modified the seat belt or the trim surrounding the seat belt.

There is no reason that this request for repair cannot be 100% successful. The warranty is very simple and clearly stated. The key...meet the requirements.

Charging problem.. Wont charge battery

The instructions for installing a new alternator usually read to fully charge the battery (12.3 - 12.8 volt range). Otherwise, the alternator will be damaged when it initializes. I have seen some extreme damage result from installing a new alternator with a low-charge battery. The torque required to turn an alternator when damaged in this scenario is unbelieveable!

My battery is boiling and smelling. Is it a faulty battery, or is my alternator causing it to over-charge the battery?

You need to replace the battery to start with. you cannot test the charging system with the battery the way it is or you will get a false reading. Once you replace the battery, you can then test your charging system to see if the alternator is causing the problem. If its charging more than 14.8 -15 volts, its too much and you will need to replace the alternator.

Charging system problem

Check charging system and make sure that the alternator is charging efficently and get back to me, because its electrical alternator can be defective especially if its aftermarket.( should be at least 14 volts with car running at idle) Good Luck

The alternator is not charging the battery. Has been replaced. Has ignition power. It's running directly off the battery.

To be sure, most major parts stores offer a free check of your battery and charging system. It must be a bad alternator, they can confirm that, and sell you one, or install it for you.countrycurt0
