the check engine light alerts you that there are problems. There will be a code or codes stored in the engines computer. You can retrieve these codes one of three ways.
1. call your local auto parts store. Many times they will do this for free.
2. buy an inexpensive code reader. Available just about anywhere that has an automotive department. They will start at about $50.
3. Bring it in to a shop to have a check engine light diagnostic done.
Once you know the code you can then start to focus on a repair. Once a repair is made the codes will be cleared and the check engine light will turn off. If you do not make the repairs the light will not stay off. It will continue to come on and stay on until the proper repair is made.
