1997 plymouth grand voyager runs normally but shuts off when it reaches operating temperature, won't start until it cools down. There is a smell of burned rubber, but can't find anything hot or that can be pinpointed from the smell. The ECU was replaced because the van wouldn't run; it has done this since the the ECU was replaced. The check engine light sometimes comes on when the van shuts itself off, and stays on for the next two or three short trips, then doesn't come on until the next time it shuts itself off. The van belongs to a friend; I was just now talking to her and haven't been able to get a scan tool or check for stored codes. Any ideas?

From under the car you can reach up in the back to gain acces to the spark plugs. Its difficult without a lift, but it can be done.

First thing i would try is to carry a can of WD-40 or quick start with me and when it quits and won't start, remove air intake hose at throttle body opening, open throttle enough to give a good spray inside throttle body, release throttle, then try to start it . If it starts and runs momentarily, you have a fuel delivery problem. If not you have an ignition problem. Then you can start troubleshooting from there.
Or you can carry something to test for spark. I just find this way easier. Don't know when/if fuel pump has ever been replaced, but not uncommon for them to work when cool and quit pumping when they get warmed up, even though they sound like they are still working. That's where a fuel pressure test would also confirm, keeping in mind pressure may read good when first started but will drop later when warmed up and engine quits.
