These systems have solenoid which is controlled by the brake pedal.the solenoid should b located underneath shifter.u have to remove trim panels on shifter , access the solenoid and check for power an ground at solenoid with key on and brake pedal depressed. the solenoid unlocks the shifter gate that loks out gears until the brake pedal is depressd therefore allowing u to shift the shifter. not really hard to do.jus need to b careful on popping out plastic trim pieces and know how to nuse an voltmeter or test light. if u have power an ground at solenoid safe to say solenoid bad. also try tappin on solenoid while checking volts to see if it starts to work.if it does solenoid is bad

I believe this vehicle is equipped with a shift lock that necessitates depressing the brake pedal before it can be shifted out of "Park". This is a safety feature designed into almost every car made nowadays to prevent unintended movement of the vehicle when shifting out of "Park". The Shift Lock solenoid is triggered by the brake light switch located near the top of the brake pedal arm. Starting with the "basics", check to see if the brake lights are working (they should illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed. If the brakes lights do not come on. then proceed to check the brake/stop light fuse. Replace if needed. Once the brake lights are functioning, the shift lock should "disengage" and allow you to shift out of "Park" when the brake pedal is pressed. If the fuses are okay, but still no brake lights, then the Brake Light Switch may need to be replaced.

Brake lights working but won't shift out of "Park"? Check for a separate fuse for the Shift Lock Solenoid. Replace if needed. Otherwise the Shift Lock Solenoid may need to be replaced. This will require disassembly of the console to access the part.

Gear shift stuck in park

Most vehicles have a small rectangular hole near the base of shifter for override. Sometime you need to flip up the little cover on it. Insert key into that hole and press shifter button and change gear. If the vehicle is not starting, try starting in neutral. Also, turn steering wheel and make sure brake is pressed while trying to start or change gears.

On my 1995 Geo tracker wich is a automatic. Wont shift.stuck in park

You need to find the shift lock override. There is usually a small plastic cover or hole somewhere near the shifter. Remove the cover and insert a thin screwdriver into the hole, depressing the lock override, while shifting it out of park. If this works then the soleniod at the shifter or the switch at the brake pedal is bad. Yes the vehicle will start in Nuetral.

The most commonly diagnosed component is the shifter and/or shifter solenoid on your Impala.
GM issued a bulletin on this problem. Contact your dealer, they are aware of the problem and you could be covered under warranty. Below is a copy of the bulletin.

I parked my truck in the garage after work. Came out later to go out, and the shifter button will not depress, so it will not shift out of park. It is stuck sitting there. What are my options?

is there a little opening hole type key tip size usually covered by a little lid. if so remove and insert something that fits. it will remove the lock.

Have a 2000 Sephia....grandson drove it..parked it in driveway....put in it park and now it won't come out of park.

Seems the shift interlock solenoid may have no voltage to it when you apply the brake or it may have gone bad .I would check voltage first it gets voltage from the brake switch when you apply the brakes. You can manually shift it by removing that little plastic cover next to the shifter and inserting a screwdriver into the hole as you push down on the shift interlock shift the gear shifter.

Key is stuck in the ignition

I have worked on several vehicles with this same problem and each one was a relatively simple repair with no parts involved, first off the shift interlock has nothing to do with it and will not prevent your vehicle from going into park, it is designed to work ONLY when coming out of park. The problem your having depends on the type of shifter handle your vehicle has, if the release lever is on the bottom and you have to push up with your fingers to release it, then the problem is...there is a rubber type cover that surrounds the release button, after time it becomes distorted and bunches up preventing the shifter from fully engaging in the park position (even though it appears the vehicle is going into park)if your careful you can work the rubber cover out and your problem is fixed. If your shifter button is on the side and pressed with your thumb the cable needs to be adjusted, this cables only purpose is to prevent key removal except when in park and is easily adjusted, with the center council removed, if you look at the front of the shifter base you will see 2 cables that snap into the shifter frame, the larger one is the gear selector cable, the smaller one runs up to the steering column and operates the mechanism that prevents key removal, where the cable snaps into the shifter frame is where the adjustment is done and is identical to a kick-down cable used on older vehicles with automatic transmissions, right where it snaps into the frame there will be a button you can press down releasing a spring loaded adjustment arm, make sure you first mark the arm for reference then press down the button and adjust it a little either way until it functions properly, hope this helps and good luck

Key doesnt turn

dose your car have a key removal lock ? a lock you have to press befor you can remove the key ?
there is a shift over ride by your shifter. between/around the shifter and the radio (closer to the sifter) there is a small round plastic cover you can remove with a small flat head screw driver. remove this. you will a key or the screw driver and insert it into, what looks like a key hole for your car and turn/press (sorry for being vauge GMC's change year to year) this should allow you to move the shifter into park. make sure the car is off or at lest you have the E-brake on as well as your peddle brakes.

Key stuck, now new problem

There is a pin that goes thru the shift cable that is falling out. Above the window buttons pry the little plastic holder out remove the 2 screws take the plastic off of the sides of the console you will see a black plastic frame with holes in it I cut a larger hole between 2 of the small holes with a hack saw on the driver side. Put the car in neutral drivers seat all the way back pull on the shift button and you will see the pin pull it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. I put 598 black loctite sealant on mine and reinstall. Shift back to park if you can get the key out and the doors unlock you have the pin in the right spot and it is making both switches when in park. You can see if it is on the switches by looking thru the hole where the little holder came out. The pin sticks out about a 1/2" on each side. Good luck
