Hi, because there is no relay in the circuit, all the lamp power passes thru that switch. Recommend you check the stop light bulbs to make sure they are the low wattage bulbs specified for your car. The higher wattage bulbs will fit in, but they draw too much current. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

On fords i dont know why only fords do this but ive found that the pigtail going to the brakelight switch has broken wires inside the insulation. therefore no power to lights because of intermittent contact with the power wire supplying voltage to the switch inside the insulation. this is a result of the switch an wires flexing bak an forth as u push an release ur brk pedal. cut the wires run a new pigtail an u should be bak in business

I have a 2005 Chrysler town and country. I went to put my foot on the brake to put it into drive and my speedometer gas and everything went blank and the park drive reverse neutral and all that went out...

I would pull the rear brake light bulbs and top 3rd brake light wire first to check for a shorted bulb.Do you have trailer wiring? That can be a source of shorts too.Next would be a "short tester" be used on the brake light wiring.

2006 brake light will not go out

Light gets power from brake light switch/.May be switch got shorted an brake light getting non-stop power causing it not to turn OFF brake light.

Get the brake light switch checked. Check volt at brake light switch.

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its wiring short for switch.

My car suddenly within 2 to 3 minutes lost all battery power after i just drove for at least 30 miles also when the car was dead i opened the door with the key once open no power no key in the ignition i...

This problem, without a complete diagnosis of the vehicle, may be indicating a problem with the brake pedal position switch, which is located on top of the brake pedal. When actuated (or on), the switch will draw power from the system and leave the brake lights on. It is entirely possible that the vehicle had been driving with the brake lights constantly on. It is also possible, and I have seen this happen, that the switch develops a short and draws constant power while at the same time leaving the brake lights out completely. It is often evidenced by melted wires at the connection to the switch. Then again, any other item can be causing parasitic current draw.

In order to rule out other issues, a complete charging system test is needed. It could be just as likely that the system is so low on battery voltage and any noise under the dash is a motor or actuator drawing a small amount of power trying to start. Pushing the brake pedal closes a large circuit, which can drain the remaining power and stop the actuator or motor in question.

Have a 03 mustang and brake light switch keeps going out its happened 3-4 times within months they keep switching it for nothing but why does it go out over and over, it went out again the other day again

There is a switch under the dash for the Brakes. If this is the part they are replacing it can be due to physical damage caused by shoes hitting it. If you can check the repair bill find out if the switch is broken or burned out each time it was replaced.

If the switch is burning up, you need to trace the Brake wiring to the 3 fixtures. The high fixture and both taillights. Your problem would be bad light sockets or a bad wire to the brake. You are just operating about 3 lightbulbs, which at best is maybe 3 Amps. But if the power is grounding through a bad wire or bad socket, it will draw as much as it takes to melt the connection.

Don't know how important it is to you to know if your feet or someone else's feet are hitting the underdash switches. You could put ATV blue on the switch and it would rub off on the shoes hitting the switch. But it could make a mess on a carpet or start a War.

I hope you find my solution very helpful.

My 20002 mustang v6 its automatic

To shift from "P" to "R", there is a swicth that allows the shift button on the shift lever to be depressed. For this switch to work, the ingnition switch must be "ON" and the brake pedal depressed. If all yor brake lights went out (or if your brake switch on the pedal fails to work), then the shift switch wont work and you can not shift out of "P".
