I have a 1998 pontiac bonneville SE 3.8 liter. It is hard to start - I have to try several times to start. sometimes the switch engages when I turn the key, sometimes nothing - not even beeping. NO power, everything dead. Acts like a short. Most of time I have to depress brake and put in neutral to get it to start - after a try or 2. Once, I lost all power while driving, as if I had turned it off. Battery checked - fine. Alternator checked - fine. starter bendix - fine. ignition coil - fine. car "computer" - fine. Any ideas?

Most likely the dimmer switch it dead. Turning it back and forth, Fast several times , sometimes will clean the contacts and it will start working again, for a while.
Hi!!
Firing order for the Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8L engine is 1-6-5-4-3-2. The number one spark plug is on the front left of the engine. Good Luck!1 A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.
Hi, does it just shudder a bit and then go away or does it always shudder when the fans are on. When the engine fan comes on it draws enough amps to put a load on the engine. It is common that you feel a slight shudder as they engage but it should smooth out.
Check your battery cables,, they are probably loose or corroded. Side mount batteries that hold multiple cables have this problem that occurs over an extended period of time. Cleaning the connections and retightening the hold down bolt may fix it. Sometimes a 3/8 bolt and a washer with a nut can be used to get
a more positive holding force to keep the cable tight.
