2003 PT Cruiser. Oil pressure light stays on. Can turn car off and restart and light goes off. Tonight engine sputtered but would not turn over and idle. After a few starting attempts, engine light and oil pressure light stayed on and now when attempting to start engine, it is like everything is dead.

Well, you probably broke it. When you see the oil light on, it's trying to tell you something. Something like "get me checked out and repaired or you'll kill me". The lights are not for your entertainment, they're for your education.

SOURCE: 2005 pt cruiser... it sputters and won't idle well

That is the first thing i would suggest you do. Replace all the spark plugs and the plug wires. Those 2 things are the most commen thing that cause misfires.

SOURCE: Where is the oil pressure sensor located on a 2003

There are 2 small passages with square headed type socket screws . Look on drivers side of block behind where the breather hose goes to the airbox. You'll need to remove the airbox. They are slightly smaller than a 1/4" drive extension.

It is very hard to try to reach the sensor from under the car. you can removed the battery, air box, also moved the fuse box aside just a bit to get more room to work (not necessary though). After removing/moving those parts you'll have plenty of room to work with. Simply disconnect the electric connection and remove the sensor with a socket. The part was $11.99 at Kragen with a lifetime warranty! (not just a dealer only item :]) The socket isn't a special socket its just a 27mm ($9.99) deepwell. I hope this helps someone, overall the job wasn't hard so no need to pay anyone to do it for you!

If your arms are long enough, you can access it top passenger side and reach way down and you won't have to remove anything! Its good to put her up on ramps to get and idea where it is, then take her off and do the repair. Forgot to mention unlocking the electrical connection by pushing the slide lock to the side.

Good luck and hope this help and keep me posted.

Why does the oil pressure light comes on

The oil pressure warning light comes on to warn the driver the oil pressure in the engine has dropped below 10psi.
The reason could be the engine is low on oil, or there is a problem with the oil pump or other internal engine component.
The oil pressure switch could also be faulty.

Im not 100% shure on this model car but check the oil and other fluids to see if they are at a good level. the computer might have put your car into a type of safe mode to not burn up the engine.

Our 2003 pt cruiser's oil light came on. the car

Low oil pressure turns on the light, not a low level of oil. You might have a serious problem.
