You may need another speedometer. The speed sensor sends a signal to both the speedo and the odometer. So if the sensor fails, both meters would stop working. The speedo gets power from the same circuit as the warning lights.
Speedometer cable may have broken. You can't tell from the outside of the cable, since it has a plastic shield. You have to disconnect it from the transmission to check it. If you can turn the cable inside the shield easily, it is broken.
Bad speed sensor on the trans if its an elctronic sensor if its mechanical then it would be a bad speedometer gear or broken cable. Sounds like its electronic so its a bad speed sensor parts a lil spendy but mostly its a pain in the *** to get to
i would locate your vehicle speed sensor and check to see if the connection is loose or messed up in some way, and it may be possible that its just ready to be replaced, hope this helps and good luck!
It goes into trans just behind engine block. If yours trans is on the drivers side than lean over fender look between engine block and firewall. If other side lean over that fender and due the same.
I would take a blind guess and sat the speedo sensor has an issue. 99' beetle should have an 01M auto, and the speed sensor is also the dipstick for the final differental drive. search around this area of the trans for the cable and snoop around. loose at the trans ? bad connection somewhere??
the trans is not getting a speed signal, fix the speedometer, that will also fix the trans. check the speed sensor first. the service eng soon light should be on.
The speedometer is driven by the computer which uses the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is located on the transmission, to determine how fast the vehicle is traveling. It is not uncommon for the VSS to go out unexpectedly, usually the check engine light will come on when it malfunctions, and the computer will lock the transmission in 2nd gear, which will allow you to limp the car in to a repair shop.
Your speed sensor has failed. The vehicles speedometer is not cable controled, it's controled by a sensor in your transmission. It's a easy fix, but the new sensor is about $80 to $100 depending on where you get it.
