Engine turns, distributor doesn't - Classic Chevrolet Cars & Trucks

  • MrEs Sep 02, 2008

Chevy 230 striaght 6, 1965. I figured out that I sheared the teeth off the cam gear, which turns the distributor. so cam is not moving. The motor turns over easily and quietly. I'm not sure if the valves have made any contact with the pistons. I'm hoping not, it does'nt sound like it. but I know the cam does'nt turn, nor the rotor. I was told to remove the cam & have a new gear pressed on at a machine shop. I'm looking for the most inexpensive route. Either fix the original motor, or buy a early model small block chevy, used and put it in. The truck doesnt get very good gas milage anyway, so why not more horse power, I guess I should think about some better brakes if I do that. I live in Monterey bay, any body got good deals?

MrE's, I am glad that you got that part figured out.

As far as you "upgrading" to some more power well there are hundreds of choices out there for you.

I would recommend picking up a copy of LMC, Classic and various other catelogs that have all the parts that you will ever need to fix up your truck.

I would suggest really plan out what your going do before you start turning wrenches, rework can eat up your dollars and drive ya nuts, lol.

Feel free to log on anytime and we can discuss anything that you need to work out.

I hope all goes well for you....good luck

I have no idea what engine, but the cause is the same for all engines,
#1 cause is the timing belt or chain is broken/damaged,
#2 the distributor driven gear is damaged.

Fixya ,1993 Camry 2.2 no current at spark plug

Keep it simple. Check all fuses. Those are known to have intermittent coil failures, so definitely check that. Also, pull the distributor cap and have someone crank the engine. If the distributor doesn’t turn, the timing belt is broke.

I have a 1998 honda accord ex 4 cyl .it shut off while i was driving. Its not getting any fire.I changed the disribator and still no fire.everything worksits getting gas.it just will not start

Does the engine sound like its turning over faster than it normally does?

When you turn the key on do all the dash light come on as they normally do?

Is there an anti-theft light on or blinking?

With the distributor cap removed, crank the engine and see if the rotor turns in the distributor. If it doesn't check to see if the timing belt is broken.

If it does turn check for power on the black with yellow wire in the distributor. If there is no power check fuse 11 in the fuse panel under the drivers side of the dash.

Let me know how that pans out. If you have any questions let me know.

Do timing gears on 1972 v8 pontiac both face up or face each other

It doesn't matter, IF you have not disturbed the distributor. If the distributor is out, then when you put the cover on, the marks should face each other. Just to make sure, when turning the engine, put your finger over #1 spark plug hole, slowly turn engine, when air blows out, turn engine slowly to the timing mark and set distributor to point to #1 cylinder on the dist cap.

87 911 carrera will turn over but wont start.... has no spark from coil, but has 12 volts to coil with key on.

If the car is getting power from the battery(lights turn on; radio turns on) when you turn the key, then it is your starter or gas distributor. To test that, you need to pour a little gas right in the hole where the engine and intake meet. Pour a little gas in that hole. If it starts up, then it is your gas distributor that is the problem not giving gas to the engine. If it doesn't start up with gas in the engine, then it is your starter. Either will be $100-$200 fix at a shop.

How do you check the coil wire on a 98 dodge stratus?

It doesn't have one. The 2.4 engine is DIS. The 2.5 engine has a distributor, but the coil is inside the distributor.

Engine turns over and runs great in good weather as soon as it rains it turns over but will not start.

hello barryi... you most likely have one or more bad spark plug wires or a tiny crack in the distributor cap resulting in this moisture problem. Carefully examine each of the spark plug wires for a hairline crack or replace the entire set. if that doesn't solve it replace the distributor cap. joe

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier, the distributor rotor doesn't turn?

This is an indication that the gear at the base of the distributor has broken. More seroius situation would be a broken gear on the cam.
If the rotor is truly not turning, the distributor needs to be pulled to check the condition of each gear.

Make certain that the rotor is pushed down securely onto the distributor post, too.
