89 vette, 48k, car starts fine, runs about a minute or 2, then shuts down, then wont restart, probably vats, after a few minutes, starts right up only to do the same thing.

Could be your vehicle anti theft system (VAT)shutting down after starting. PIA. Check out the module involved.

The problem might be your Vats security system. This causes the car to either "not start" or "shut down" while running, or start for 5 seconds and then die. (depending on the system) If the security light flashes, i guarantee that this is what the problem is. 1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year.

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. has your battery died before this happened ? or the radio taken out

Ignition switch is bad.

Yo, sounds like a crank position sensor to me.

The next time it happens watch the tach & see if jumps around a bit.

The CPS is directly below the water pump and is a common problem with these cars. (I have an 89 SHO as well)

The car will die and not throw a code. After a few minutes to dry up it'll start up as if nothing wrong....it can happen (shut off) anytime at any speed.

Not an easy fix...goto SHOforum and look up the 60k service how to and dig in.
