My security light has been staying on for more than two years, aggravating, but I don't notice any performance problems, everything is locked.

Sounds like a security system problem.Has the security light been blinking? If you have another key that is not worn as much as the one you are using and try it and see if it will start.
Hello you could guess the problem but that could be one of many things however you will need to have a scan completed to pinpoint the fault and repair most garages charge from $25.00 up to $75.00 for this service sometimes they will wave the cost if the completed at that garage

The TDM in the security system (VATS/PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars and it will get worse till the car wont start anymore. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

yes key pass (special meatal resistor) on key to ign. tumbler is going bad and will eventually leave you stranded ignition tumber and rekey will be nessesary
