Need to change the engine coolant temp sensor, Where is it and what are the steps to changing it.

Heed of engine temperature!!! (Wait for engine cooling).
The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is placed on back of cylinder head, towards clutch side. Disconnect the electrical cable plug and remove the fastening circlip. Remove the ECT sensor by pulling out from cylinder head. Extract also old "O-ring" sealing rubber. Install new ECT sensor with new "O-ring" sealing rubber.

Temperature sensor causing check engine indicator to come on...how do I change it how do I change a glow plug

The temperature sensor/ECT/ is black squire 4 pins sensor with pinlock. Before changing ensure there is not pressure in engine coolant system by opening engine coolant tank.Be very carefull ! If the engine is on operation temperature there is about 1bar pressure. If so open the cup of the tank slowly and wait the pressure going out.Pse note when you pullout the sensor the O-ring always stayng in.Take it out before fitting the new one.

Vw jetta 2002 code p1296/po118

Both of these codes indicate trouble with the signal from the coolant temperature sensor.

So either the sensor is bad. The thermostat is not working properly and the coolant temperature is truly way out. The wiring to the sensor is short or open. The computer is bad and it is manifesting itself through this fault.

Does the car warm up properly? If it runs hot, or takes forever to warm up, this indicates a problem with the thermostat.

If the car runs at the proper temperature the next thing to look at is the coolant temp sensor and wiring. Some resistance values for VWs are here:

Temperature sensor

the computer doesn't say replace the sensor, it says that there is a problem in the sensor circuit, that can be the wiring, the PCM or the sensor, u must check all three.
