91 Grand Prix SE: If you can turn car off with the key, but can't get the key out - first thing you should check is to see if the button on the shifter is fully releasing (the button on the shift handle you have to push to shift out of Park).
Could be a problem with the cable to the shifter. The shifter is supposed to be in park to lock the ignition switch and remove the key. Could also be something jammed in the lock cylinder.
There is a hole under the steering column you will have to stick a pen in it, and you will hear a "spring" sound and you can remove your keys. Once removed, check your shifter, and clean around it. Sometimes this is caused because your shifter is not completely in park. Other solution is to replace the ignition switch after you get them out. Unless you want to just stick a pen in the hole everytime. Thanks.
you have either a faulty shifter assembly or the ignition shift interlock cable that runs between ignition cylinder and shifter assembly it is very common for the cables that causes this.
There may be a brake pedal switch sensor that determines when you have the brake applied. Normally if the pedal is down the pedal switch activates and removes a "lock" that would keep the shifter from moving.
Ordinarily when this happens you have to physically move the lock or replace or adjust the brake pedal switch to get the shifter to move freely.
If the car is not in "PARK" properly (the transmission can be in another gear even if the shifter "seems" to be in park - this would require an adjustment in the shift linkage) then the key won't turn to start.
Likewise until it is "properly" in park or neutral you may have difficulty locking the steering column and removing the key.
The ignition has an interlock that will not let you turn the key all the way to OFF until the transmission is in park. This is done via a sensor either in the transmission itself, or on the shifter.
With the car off, step on the brake and shift from Park to Reverse, then back in to Park. You should hear a faint "click" as the interlock engages. If not, then your sensor (switch) may have failed.
I'm guessing your gran prix is a floor shifter? if so, sitting in drivers seat have car running, put your foot on the brake, and move the shifter to first gear, while you are doing this watch the steering cover behind the steering wheel rotate also.when you see the column cover moving bring the shifter back to the park position, while watching which way the column is rotating, when you get to park put your hand around the bottom of that rotating column cover and turn it up further and remove your key.the shifter cable needs to be adjusted some
well the problem is that the key lock actuator is not getting the power from either the shifter switch in the center column or bad ignition switch or bad actuator. you will have to check power at the ignition switch. white wire is the wire that supplies the shifter switch with power
set your parking brake, insert your key into the shift interlock, located next to your shifter, push all the way in, move your gear shifter to neutral, remove key, start car, release parking brake, drive away, have it serviced ASAP
SHIFTER DOESN'T SEEM TO GO TOTALLY INTO PARK
