I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 4.7 which recently had the spark plugs changed out. Ever since then it has been idling rough and has stalled out a couple of times. A fuel smell is more present now and the PO44O code is popping up. I have visually checked all the hoses for cracks and have found none. I took the tube off the PCV and it still has good suction to it. Appreciate any assistance

Thanks for the reply, in response to your possibilities of what the problem might be. The PO44O code has been present here and there for years. Early on Dodge (service dept.) said it was the O2 sensors so after going back and forth a couple of times with the same issues a mechanic told me about the gas cap scenario. That work for about six months and then the code comes back and has been like that since. How do you test to see if its the solenoid and to determine if the canister is plugged orif its not working properly?

When I took the plugs out the gaps were consistently .065 and not in too bad of shape. I set the new plugs at .040 as per the manual (Haynes). It wasn't running that bad prior to me changing the plugs but I figured I had well exceeded the recommended replacement for the plugs as per the manual. I also had prior to the change of the plugs and PCV codes PO456, PO441 and the ever present PO44O. But with all that it still was running pretty descent but as you could assess the gas mileage wasn't good.

I think that the PLUG gaps need to checked as a higher gap can cause non firing and so one of the cylinder may not fire and so give you unburned fuel smell, irregular idling, vibration, shut off and poor power. This due to the fact that one or two cylinders are not firing and so these signs are seen.
Hence remove and check the plugs and plug gaps.

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly

Have you cleaned the throttle body? It gets really gunked up with time. Also, when my daughter's car had those symptoms, it turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor. It was a cheap, easy fix.

Rough idle on 2002 Dodge Neon

Without trouble codes you are fishing in the dark. If the engine has a cylinder that is dead at idle from a fuel injector or ignition problem, it should have a code for a miss on that cylinder. A mechanical problem like a burned valve could cause the problem without setting a code. Have you checked compression on all 4 cylinders ? ?

Dodge ram 1500 5.9 idles rough and stales out

This truck has problems with the cover inside intake leaking vacuum and causing rough idle and oil usage , its hard to say what your problem is with out testing, have you had the check engine light scanned for codes? what year is this dodge?these also had intake leak problems. try starting the engine and let it idle and then with some carburator cleaner spray around intake gasket and see if idle changes if it does then you have a intake gasket leak, another problem may be a leaking injector, try some sea foam in the gas tank and run a half tank of gas and see if that helps, otherwise a fuel injection system cleaning would be the way to go but this is only if its an injector problem, if this truck is 1996 or newwer have the computer scanned at an auto parts store for any codes. if there are codes let me know what they are even list the code and #. good day

Have the spark plugs and wires been changed? If yes then are the spark plug wires routed and loomed up correctly? If not check for exhaust damaged wires.

okay, the o2 code can cause problems, theres a problem with one of the o2 sensors, theres 2 or 4 sensors, the repair was not done right or theres another bad o2 sensor, next thing i would check is the idle air control motor, this sounds like it sticks at time or just stops working, start with these things first,

Engine runing rough

This code is most likely not related to the problem, it sounds like you may have picked up some contaminated gasoline, maybe has water in it or other like dirt.
