Speedomiter my speedomiter is spoatic it will work for a while then stop then start again on it own. can you tell me what I can do to fix it myself.

short probably in the radio. if it is after market radio there is bare wires some were some radios like kenwood when shorted just need to disconnect the power like your key on/off and it will reset

Sounds like the transmission speed sensor.
Its mounted on the side of the transaxle.

could be the speed sensor is the problem, replace if not works after cleaning. and it be found at the top rear of the transmission.

All you have to do is look at the transmission in order to tell.
A cable will be thick and straight, while an electronic unit will use a thin, flexible, wire.

the speed sensor is located near the passenger axle ck the wiring first for damage then replace speed sensor.

check ur fuses under the hood first - get a cheap test light from walmart - about 5 dollars - - test every single fuse with the key on ----
then - take down the vin number - call the dealer and ask about recalls

in a 1998 it should be electronic. if it's a fuse. it is either in the power distribution center in front of the brake master cylinder or in the driver side of the dashboard at the drivers door opening. but my honest guess is the electronic speed sensor on the transmission. go to a auto parts store and they can tell you exactly where it's located.

If all the brake lights are out it is likely your stop lamp switch is bad, it controls lights and cruse, and also supplies input to ecm/tcm. The old ones would just pop apart, you can put them back together but to replace the switch it is only 20-30 bucks. Try that.
