My 1996 Mazda MPV V6 has had a tapping noise problem ( under the valve covers) for about 3 years and I have tried many oil additives and different oil grades with no resolution. Last week I tried the lightest synthetic oil I could find, Mobile 1 5W-20. As soon as I started the engine it had no noise at all. I have started it many times since and still no noise. I assume that the oil passages have become narrow over the years ( or are narrow by design) and this light oil is able to move through them quicker and keep the hydraulic lifters under proper pressure. You may have to beg or threaten your mechanic to use this oil. He will try to scare you into using a heavier oil. He may just be ignorant. But, stand your ground, say Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-20 or I will go elsewhere.

The tapping is most likely your lifters, These makes the noise when oil is broke down or low, Maybe even a weak oil oump, Usually it is still making the niose on accl. and covers up by engine noise. Good luck to ya.

My car makes a droning or humming sound around 2000 rpm along with vibration but it goes away as soon as I increase the speed or come to a stop.

could be the timing belt tensioner. with the timing casing removed place a socket extension bar on some metal then to your ear as it will help you locate the noise. be careful tho. failing that big end shells i would check. hope this helps

Engine noise when starts

Sounds like you need to run a thinner oil maybe. The oil is not pressurizing the engine components quickly and you hear was is called engine tappets. The rockers on some cars have what are called hydraulic lifters. They fill with oil after startup and then the sound goes away. You may think about having the lifters replaced soon, which are not too expensive. Be sure your vehicle has hydraulic lifters also. If your mechanic is any good he will know if it does or not. He maybe waiting for it to cause engine damage also, and knowing you will return to him to have it repaired also. Be careful.

1989 Lebaron with a tapping noise.

I would replace the injector and see how that goes. It could be going bad or malfunctioning. You run the chance of it going bad and causing serious engine problems.
