My samsung SGH-a436 cell phone has bluetooth capability, and when paired via my new 2011 subaru outback Harmon augio system, it works. The problem is, the connection is lost when the vehicle is turned off and restarted ... I am told I need to update my phone to one which is compatible with this vehicle so it will remain paired continuously.. My question is, what phones are compatible with this vehicle.

First: The Forester's radio/Bluetooth is almost brain dead. We should ALL demand Subaru to provide firmware (software) update to correct to numerous problems with this system.

To somewhat correct your problem:

1. Reserve a big amount of time and patient. It will be painful!
2. Navigate the menus to reset all the radio's Bluetooth settings. Make sure that no phone or device is paired with the radio.
3. Reconnect (pair) your phone to the radio by pressing the TALK button on the steering wheel and follow the voice prompts. Do not pair your phone to the radio by pressing buttons on the radio.

NOTE: ONLY ONE PHONE can be connected to the Subaru's radio system and used automatically when starting the car. Kind-of. If you have another phone or user, then... good luck!

if you scroll through to manual page 7-25 (PDF Page 180), you'll find the info on pairing bluetooth stretching on for quite a ways. It looks like it can practically elope with your phone along with passing along phone calls.

I'm hoping that can help you run through pairing or diagnoses.
(The other thing to potentially look for might be a blown fuse. Forums like this one
Bluetooth phone icon stuck on and radio won work place bluetooth with the Audio System fuse, and say pulling the fuse and then replacing it will reset the Bluetooth as well. The manual noted above, starting on manual page 10-35, goes over the location of all the fuse panels, and pairs fuses to function.
