Question about 1987 Honda Prelude

1988 Honda si Alternator Problem

I have an excellent independent Honda mechanic. My Alternator light is on. He has checked the alternator belts, brushes, etc and the alternator is not charging the battery. He has replaced the alternator with a new factory replacement alternator and it is not charging the battery either. He showed me the wiring diagram for the model and it shows a single wire from the alternator (the voltage regulator, etc) self contained in the alternator. I believe the wire went to the alternator light indicating when it is charging. The diagram does not show, nor can he find any description as to whether the voltage should be +12v or ground. Do you know?

Thanks

1989 honda civic runs but when you turn lights on car stalls out. Have checked alternator, fuses.

CHECK ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT TENSION.MAKE SURE IT NOT TOO LOOSE.AND CHECK YOUR IDLE SPEED.IT SHOULD BE 700 - 800 RPM.IF IDLE SPEED TOO LOW ALTERNATOR WONT TURN FAST ENOUGH.BUT CHECK ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT BATTERY.IT SHOULD BE 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS.IF NOT PROBLEM IN ALTERNATOR.CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND ITS BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES.

you may have a faulty alternator or and internal part in the alternator, replace it with a dealer part and that may solve the problem, it must be a dealer part..

Check the alternator belt. It needs to be tight. A parts store can check your alternator on your car for voltage output. A loose belt or a weak alternator will cause your problem.

Check the function of the alternator. Charge the battery with a battery charger or jump start the engine. While the engine is running use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery posts. Red to + and black to -. You should have between 13.5 − 16 volts. If you do not the alternator is bad or the drive belt is loose. If the alternator checks ok then something is on that is drawing power from the battery and running it down. Check under hood, trunk, glove box, and interior lights. Can also be a brake light switch causing the brake lights to stay on. In rare cases it can also be a stuck relay such as a power window relay. From you description I think you will find the alternator is ok and your problem is something is on and running the battery down.

2005 TDI battery light

Check your battery terminals are not loose or corroded.
Check your alternator dive belt tension is OK.
If no problem with drive belt, it may be worn alternator brushes.
If the problem persists get the alternator checked.

How do I change the alternator belt in my 1999 Excel (list did not have the year)?

hi mate, your problem is fairly easy to fix-----remove the plastic under tray on the drivers side, from underneath, undo the main alternator bolt, just enough to move the alternator, now from the top undo the belt tension adjustment locking bolt, then back off the tension adjuster itself until the alternator belt is loose and can slip off the pulleys-----fitting your new belt is the reverse to this. all the best.

alternator can have bad brushes in it. They are not hard to replace if autozone sells them.
Otherwise it can also be a fuse which leads from alternator to battery.
