What does it cost to replace the electronic ignition system in a 1999 Mercedes C230?
What does it cost to also replace the serpentine belt and drive belt?
My car is in the shop and they are quoting me $1550 for the ignition system and $315 to replace the 2 belts.
I want to make sure I am not getting ripped off

You could request a security code from the dealer or an experienced electronics technician must open the redio and read the code from the memory chip inside, but this will cost you money. You'd better replace the radio with a new model w/bluetooth and CD.
TRY USING A BOX END WRENCH OR A SOCKET AND WRENCN TURN TENSIONER CENTER BOLT COUNTERCLOCK WISE TO UNLOAD TENSION WHILE SLIP BELT OFF THE ALTERNATOR.THAT WAY BELT WILL BE OUT THE WAY UNTIL YOU REPLACE WATER PUMP.WHEN DONE TURN TENSIONER CLOCKWISE WHILE SLIP DRIVE BELT BACK OVER THE ALTERNATOR.
first replace the battery in your key and have a look if you have any additional key try by that key it may work if without right diagnose no one can find it's faulty key or electronic ignition switch, if not the fault in key
possibly faulty steering lock or electronic ignition switch, in this
case you have to get your car in to the Mercedes workshop for diagnose.
I looked this up and the engine used in this car does not use a timing belt, it has a timing chain, they are only replaced if the engine is torn down to be rebuilt.

Hello drtonyg... This is an electronic shifter controler on the C230...Almost every time they fail the shifter assy. needs replaced as a whole unit....There have been some techs that have tried to clean and repair the shifter assembly and reuse it but most attempts fail..You can disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter assembly underneath the vehicle and then see if your shifter moves all the way(this would eliminate any shifter assembly failures) Good luck, i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.
