Trans failsafe is "Limp" mode, it means a sensor has triggered due to a fault in OBC. You need to bring it to BMW or a competent shop to have a fault scan done to identify the actual cause. Limp mode allows you to drive short distance (so you're not stranded roadside)

Before going to Bmw... get your battery and alternator checked... a low voltage from either of these can cause the comp to miss read sensors. After spending alot of money on my 1997 Bmw 535i for it to have a second had gearbox fitted... the fail safe was still coming up... Them my alarm kept going off... i had a car before where the alarm kept going off and was told to replace batt which solved it. So i replaced batt on my Bmw to solve alarm issue and it solved my fail safe issue to. I later had my old bmw batt tested for free by a friend and it is ment to be able to with stand a 200amp load for 15mins.... mine only lasted 30 secs.... Altough it turned the starter just fine... How to reest trans fail safe mode 2005 bmw x5 3.0 litre diesel

Have to have the transmission problem diagnosed

Best not to use it or you may ruin the trans in as little
a ten miles & may have already, using it in failsafe

Fail Safe is there to protect the trans, but only if you stop
using it almost when the light comes on.

It will cut injector pulse, ignition spark & such, to let you
know your have a problem & lock the trans in a specific
gear,BUT folks still continue to cycle the ignition key &
drive on, to the tune of $5.000 leaving their bank account

The transmission has gone into limp mode. My Boomer done the same thing' if it wont reset itself i think the only option is a BMW dealer to faultfind. Very complicated computor controlled transmission beyond any novice im afraid.

My car , E60 2004 530D goes into "transm.failsafe " continuously. Ive reset it and then its fine for a day or 2. Thers oil under the car still ( light brown) when parked. I had the oil topped...

I do think this is a low oil condition and you need to get it addressed now.Low oil will damage the transmission very quickly. The factory trans oil in this car is a light brown and almost the color of motor oil.The oil in an automatic transmission is not just for lubrication, it is also the hydraulic and cooling medium.Low oil means low pressure which means slip which means damage.Have the car towed to a sevice facility. This transmission can cost 4 to 5 thousand to repair.Good luck!

BMW X5 2004 TRANS FAILSAFE PROG

Hi; If I get the 'Trans Failsafe Prog" message twice within about 2 hours, The SES light will go on automatically. Since I do not seem to have any real transmission problems, this SES message clears itself in about 24 hours. The "Trans Failsafe Prog" messageseems to be used to indicate other transmission problems as well, like loss of transmission fluid, so be careful. I have a 2002 X5. Cheers. Omer

I also have a trans.failsafe prog.indicator light on my 2000 bmw

You have an alternator or battery concerne, low voltage caused all the other problems,Start with a battery, then have alternator tested. The failsafes are designed to keep from burning up solenoids and other electronic components.
