    My brake lights were working fine yesterday and today they just stopped working. My turn signals and my day time running lights work. My flashers work as well. I don't know why just my brake lights are out. How can I fix this?

On my chevy s10 if i have one brake light go out the other wont light up they are linked together same with the reverse and running lights

First Start with the Stop lights fuse Check and make sure it's good if questionable just replace it. Check to make sure you have power going into the fuse Use a 12V test light or volt meter. If you have power going into the fuse make sure the other side of the fuse has power through the fuse. Next Go to the brake light switch and test for power going into the switch if you have power put your tester on the other wire on the brake light switch and press the brake pedal, If there is power the switch is good and if not the switch is either out of adjustment or bad.
If you have power in and out of the brake light switch with the brake pedal pressed then you have to find the breadk in the wire back to the lights Oh don't forget the bulbs and the grounds for the bulbs.

Brake Lights Dull or Flickering - All Cars

Dull or Dim Brake Light Repair: If your car has a dull or dim brake light it is dangerous to you and other drivers. A dim brake light is a mystery to most people because the bulb is working, just not correctly. First confirm a new and correct brake light bulb has been installed. Next, turn the ignition key to the "on" position and have a helper depress the brake pedal. With the bulb installed touch a grounded test light to the outer bulb holder ring. If the bulb brightness changes the bulb socket ground has high resistance and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Flickering Brake Light Bulb Repair: A flickering brake light bulb can be very distracting and annoying. A brake light flickers because the power or ground is being obstructed momentarily. The most common cause for this condition is a loose fitting bulb socket. To check for this condition remove the brake light bulb in question, while a helper hold their foot on the brake pedal move the bulb around slightly in the socket. If the bulb flickers replace or repair the bulb socket as needed to regain proper brake light bulb operation. If the brake light bulb socket tests ok wiggle the brake light fuse and wiring at the brake light bulb socket, brake light switch and turn signal switch (American cars). If the brake light bulb flickers repair the component or wiring as needed.
Preferred Procedure: Always replace brake light bulbs with manufacturers recommend replacement bulbs. If you cannot find the correct replacement bulb part number consult an auto parts store for additional manufacturer information.
Common Problems
When brake light bulbs are replaced with the incorrect bulb causing no or dim brake light operation
If the brake lights stay on continuously it could mean the brake light switch has failed or an adjustment is needed.

Light gets power from brake light switch/.May be switch got shorted an brake light getting non-stop power causing it not to turn OFF brake light.

Get the brake light switch checked. Check volt at brake light switch.

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its wiring short for switch.

I have no break lights or turn signals

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING


It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

My 1996 taurus has the brake lights constantly on. when you disconnect the switch by teh brake pedal the car will not shift out of park but teh brake lights turn off???
CHECK BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO SEE IF ITS TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL.IF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR BRACKET LOOSE AND AWAY FROM BRAKE PEDAL BRAKE LIGHT WILL STAY ON.IF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH INTACT BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH NEED REPLACING.WHEN REPLACING BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR IT NEEDS ADJUSTING MAKE SURE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH PLUNGER TOUCHES BRAKE PEDAL ARM WHEN YOU RELEASE BRAKE PEDAL BRAKE LIGHTS SHOULD TURN OFF.

Brake light stays on after car is turned off. Fix?
Most likely the brake light switch located down on the brake pedal lever has either malfunctioned, or is out of adjustment, and when the brake pedal is in the "up" position the brake light switch should be fully depressed, and if it is not then dis-connect the wiring connector to the brake light switch and then turn the brake light switch in until it just fully depresses the brake light switch, and then tighten the locking nut(s) and reconnect the wire connector to the brake light switch, and then test to see that the brake lights are working properly.

If the brake light switch seems to be adjusted properly, then dis-connect the wiring connector to the brake light switch, and if the brake lights go out then replace the brake light switch and adjust it as described above.

As cadman mention to check the fuse, and if there ok check your brake light switch along the brake peddle arm. Before you doany of that, turn your hazard light on to make sure that all your light's are not burnt out. Good luck
