You need ot open the door panel, and check to see is the lever actuator rod is still connected.
The outer handle is connected to the lock with a steel rod. If the outer handle has broken or the clip that holds the rod onto that handle has broken, then thats what you need to replace. You will need to remove the inside door trim to access the locks and rods. Remove the door trim as best you can if you are unable to open the door at all and reach into the door to access the inner door lock rod. Pulling or pushing the rod should allow you to open the door and remove the trim completely.
If there is no obvious damage to the outer door lock, check where the outer door handle rod connects to the lock itself as the clips holding the rods in place can fail. If the clips have failed, replace them with new clips from the vehicle manufacturer..
