Might need a new fuel level sending unit...... or the gauge cluster is bad... there was a recall years back on the gauges.... the sending unit is not terribly expensive but the gauge cluster...good luck

I think this is a very common problem with these trucks the same thing has happened to me and i replaced the fuel pump and sending unit and the gauge worked great for about 2 days then it went back to bouncing all over the place. And it seems to be one of the most asked questions in the GM forums.

Have a '92 4runner gas gauge has stopped working properly how does the system work?

It could either be a bad circuit board that controls the gas gauge, or the float in the fuel tank that is connected to the fuel pump has a crack in it and is full of gas so it just sits at near its lowest point.

If my gas gauge doesnt work can it just be a fuse

Doubt it.
The same fuse for the gauge would handle the rest of the cluster.
Probably the sending unit in the tank.

Gas gauge jumps from empty to what ever the tank is filled at .some time it shows half full etc then just drops to empty, then after a few minutes driving it goes back to a level.

I own two 1993 960s and on one the gas gauge sits on 0 until I thump (hard) the plastic lens in front of the gauage in the instrument panel. It is most certainly due to a cold solder or cracked solder joint. Can be a corroided contact.

Thump the gas gauge arrow like I do when it is registering 0. If it does not move then it is the sender in the tank that has a flat spot.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee gas gauge reads empty but tank is full.

Fuel level sending units are known to go bad on these.
