I do not think this is thermostat , in city driving if it was thermostat the issue would be worse , if you have something clogging the radiator fins , mud , leaves etc... this could cause an overheat
Just follow the upper radiator to the engine, the thermostat is under the cover that the upper radiator hose attaches to on the engine. Make sure to bleed the air out of the system after draining it to replace T Stat or the engine will overheat and damage a head gasket..
a cracked block or bad gasket can result in compression bleeding into your cooling jacket causing the symptom you describe. a good shop has a tester to determine if there is compression residue in your coolant. that would be a place to start.
if it was a head gasket it would overheat long before 20-30 miles
if there is no sign of water leaking from hoses etc when the car has warmed up it is most probably the radiator or possibly the water pump or thermostat has called it a day
If you see no leaks and the fluid level is also good in the rad overflow bottle. It could be the water pump. When the car is running do you feel the hoses are hot and pressurized. Do you feel heat with your heater cranked up. The coolant may not be circulating. This would mean you need a new water pump, most likely the impeller is worn/broken inside. It can be fixed by yourself but will require some skill and time.
Unfortunately, I refer to repairs of this type as "search and repair missions"...You've overlooked the radiator core...the only thing left and probably the culprit. ($180) Good Luck
remove coolant.remove thermostat remove bottom radiator hose to water pump.put a empty container under the radiator.take a water hose put it where thermostat goes flush out the rust in block.watch the water as it come out the water pump .if stream water is small keep flushing until you get a study sream of clear water. also flush out radiator. lower water pressure dont flush radiator it with high water pressure you could burst it. make clean the over flow jug .make sure it not stopped up.put in a new thermostat and radiator pressure cap. fill radiator with half antifreeze and half water.bleed the coolant system.
