I have a volvo 940 and I disconnected the battery. When I hooked the battery back up, the car would not start. There is a red light near the steering wheel that is flashing. What does this light mean and how can I get my car running?

What symbol is shown on the light? If the battery is hooked up correctly, the car should start if it was starting before. Are the cables tight? Are they hooked correctly? Is the battery fully charged?

Sounds as if you have set the immobiliser, does your car have the volvo guard alarm system fitted, (is the red light on the window frame?) I found that when reconnecting the battery if you just tap the connector on the terminal 4-5 times before connecting it it would reset the immobiliser and the car will start

Replacing a starter on a 1993 volvo 940 turbo. Is this a difficult task?

It looks easy for the 940 but I am not sure about the 940 turbo, as maybe some of the turbo parts are in the way. I'm not sure about that, since there is no documentation on the turbo model vs. the 940 standard model. If you can follow the following instructions, then I would give it a whirl.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - 1993 Volvo 940
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Disconnect the leads from the starter motor.
  3. Remove the starter motor retaining bolts.
  4. Remove the starter motor from the vehicle. To install:
  5. Position the starter motor to the flywheel housing.
  6. Apply locking compound to the bolt threads and install the retaining bolts finger-tight.
  7. Tighten the bolts to approximately 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  8. Connect the starter motor leads and the negative battery cable. Fig. 1: Unfasten the nut retaining the starter cables . . . 90952p12.jpg

I think I have a bad alternator on my 1992 volvo 940 turbo

Hi!
Start by charging the battery completely. Then, start your car and while running, remove the NEGATIVE battery cable from the battery. If the car dies, your alternator is bad. If it keeps running, reinstall the battery cable and turn the car off. Check for something that's on that would drain your battery like a light in the trunk, glove box, etc. that wont shut off.
